The bridge over Little Falls on Hicks-Wilson Road on the Monkton-White Hall line will be closed on Jan. 30 so crews can repair damage caused by Tropical Storm Lee last September. Baltimore County crews will repair deteriorated abutments that were further damaged by Lee's floodwaters. The 60-foot single-lane bridge was built in 1988. Repairs should be finished by the end of February, county engineers said.

In the far corners of Maryland, cars from Harford County, especially eastern Harford County, as well as Cecil County (the western parts, notably) can be picked out in any crowded parking lot. They're the ones that have the large grocery store-style bar code stickers affixed to their drivers' sides. In some cases, half a dozen or more stickers are visible; other folks are more judicious and placed new stickers over the old ones. The stickers made possible unlimited crossings of the Route 40 bridge over the Susquehanna River.

The Route 90 bridge to Ocean City, closed since mid-October for emergency repairs, will reopen about 10 a.m. today - just in time for Thanksgiving, the State Highway Administration has announced. The bridge, one of two connecting the mainland with the ocean resort, had been expected to remain closed through mid-December. The 38-year-old bridge over Assawoman Bay in Worcester County was closed after inspectors discovered deterioration in a girder on an 85-foot section of the span. While the bridge was being repaired, the U.S. 50 bridge was the only one serving the barrier island.

A hearing tonight will help determine if a controversial bridge that linked several northwest Baltimore County communities to Liberty Road will be rebuilt. The Buckingham Road Bridge, built more than 60 years ago over Gwynns Falls, gave residents in communities such as Villa Nova and Sudbrook Park access to Liberty Road. Those closer to Liberty Road say they don't want the bridge rebuilt; those farther east say they do, and the debate has antagonized many residents between the Liberty and Reisterstown Road corridors.

Governor Schaefer's announcement that the state will go ahead with plans to build a high bridge over the Severn River near historic Annapolis is a perfect example of what is wrong with federal highway funding. Fearful of losing $32 million, the state's attitude is: The money's there, so let's use it -- regardless of the appropriateness of the bridge or opposition from the public. In a time when federal dollars are growing scarcer, the governor's decision was not totally unexpected. But is it wise to let federal money dictate a decision that can change the character of one of the state's most treasured towns?

August 1949 A 300-foot piece of an abandoned Huntington Avenue trolley trestle collapsed while workers were dismantling the bridge. The section fell 80 feet onto the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad tracks. No one was hurt. June 1972 Tropical Storm Agnes ruined the Buckingham Road bridge, a two-lane span that linked several Northwest Baltimore County neighborhoods to Liberty Road. A one-lane bridge was erected and remained until April 1992, when a bus exceeding the 5-ton weight limit nearly toppled it. March 22, 1976 A 10-foot section of a drawbridge on Route 404 in Denton collapsed over the Choptank River the day after a severe windstorm.
