It's a play that is old as the game of football, and to work, the timing of the call and its execution have to be flawless. Pete Pompey reached into his bag of tricks, pulled out the hook-and-ladder play and gave it to senior backup quarterback Tavon Williams with just over a minute remaining yesterday. The 65-yard pass and run play concluded with 56 seconds on the clock and lifted No. 4 Edmondson to a 43-37 victory over Northwest of Montgomery County in a Class 2A quarterfinal at Poly's Lumsden-Scott Stadium.

LOS ANGELES - It was only the first game of the NBA Western Conference finals, yet the Portland Trail Blazers looked like a team fighting desperately to survive. Coach Mike Dunleavy all but admitted that he had no answer for league Most Valuable Player Shaquille O'Neal, instituting an if-you-can't-beat-him-foul-him strategy that was almost as ineffective as it was embarrassing. Seven-foot center Arvydas Sabonis played 33 minutes and had the same number of points as the Blazers have victories in this much-anticipated best-of-seven series - which resumes tonight with Game2 at the Staples Center.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- This was not about a personal vendetta, Michael Jordan was saying. It was not about redeeming himself from his most embarrassing moment as a player a year ago when the Orlando Magic eliminated the Chicago Bulls from the playoffs.Sure, Mike. The truth is that this was personal for Jordan. And on a day when his teammates didn't play particularly well, Jordan scored 45 points to lead the Bulls to a 106-101 win that sent Chicago to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1993.
