A recap of the Orioles' 6-5 win over the Astros last night: Mora delivers Melvin Mora stood at the plate in the eighth inning with two runners on, two outs and the Astros leading, 5-4. He was facing Astros closer Jose Valverde, who was pumping 97 mph fastballs at the Orioles. Mora kept fouling them off, and the count remained full. With the remains of an announced 21,535 raising the noise level at Camden Yards, Mora drove another fastball, the ninth pitch of the at-bat, into the right-center-field gap to score Adam Jones and Brian Roberts for a 6-5 lead.

HOUSTON -- Craig Biggio got his 3,000th career hit last night, and Carlos Lee's grand slam in the 11th gave the Houston Astros an 8-5 win over the Colorado Rockies. Lee's shot to left field off Brian Fuentes (0-3) came on the first pitch. Biggio singled in the 11th, tying a career high with his fifth hit. Hunter Pence followed with a double before Lance Berkman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Troy Tulowitzki's bases-empty shot off Brian Moehler (1-2) to lead off the 11th made it 5-4. The loss extends Colorado's season-high losing streak to seven games.

St. Louis Cardinals Manager: Tony La Russa 2002 finish: 97-65, first place Story line: The Cardinals suffered through a tragedy-marred 2002 season and still managed to win the NL Central. They'll go into 2003 as one of the NL favorites to reach the World Series. Changing faces: The pitching staff remains in an almost constant state of transition. Left-handed starter Chuck Finley became a free agent, right-hander Andy Benes retired and the bullpen lost veteran setup man Dave Veres, but the Cardinals added starters Chris Carpenter, Dustin Hermanson, Brett Tomko and Joey Hamilton to create a large pool of candidates for the starting rotation.
