NHL senior vice president Brian Burke suspended New York Rangers right wing Alexei Kovalev five games yesterday for a tripping incident involving Washington's Dale Hunter.Burke said Kovalev "intentionally kicked" Hunter's skate from beneath him in a "senseless and unnecessary" act that caused the Capitals' center to tear the medial collateral ligament in his left knee.Kovalev, who was suspended from the Rangers' game Tuesday against the New Jersey Devils, will also miss the next four games, beginning tomorrow in Toronto.

Capitals forward Pat Peake, who had seven points in Washington's first nine games, has been placed on the injured list and will be out for at least a month.Peake suffered a fractured thyroid cartilage of the throat Sunday night when he was slashed by St. Louis Blues defenseman Chris Pronger during a game the Capitals won, 3-1.No penalty was called on the play, but Washington general manager David Poile has sent a tape to Brian Burke, the NHL's vice president and director of hockey operations, and asked him to review the incident.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- The NHL suspended New York Rangers right wing Alexei Kovalev, pending a hearing today, for a cheap shot that injured Washington Capitals center Dale Hunter on Sunday.Kovalev skated up behind Hunter and used his left skate to knock Hunter's legs out from under him. When Hunter fell, he suffered a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee. He will be out up to six weeks.Hunter was in his second game back after completing a 21-game suspension for his own cheap shot on New York Islander Pierre Turgeon in last spring's playoffs.
