"When I first entered high school, I wanted to be a part of the Homecoming committee, and all kinds of stuff like that," Doherty, now 18, recalled recently. "I followed my friends and joined some of their clubs, but I definitely decided it wasn't for me. I wanted to go to the ice rink every day and train.

In a chapel at Beth Israel Congregation, the four members of the Hoffman family -- parents Dale and Sharona, daughters Brenna and Sarah -- gathered around Rabbi Moshe Druin. A scroll lay spread out on the table before him, along with a quill pen and a jar of ink. The injunction to participate in the creation of a Torah is the last of the 613 mitzvot, or commandments, in Judaism. Druin, a Torah scribe, turned to 14-year-old Brenna to ask why that might be. "Why wouldn't it be honor your parents, or love God?"

Her explanation comes across so simply, it's amusing."I was having a good day, and their goalie wasn't," said Severn School's Brenna Ryan, when asked about her seven goals against Lutheran in the season's third game. The analysis gets even better."The ball was getting to me in front of the cage, and I was just slapping it in."She's been doing a lot of that this year. Ryan leads metro area field hockey players in scoring with 18 goals and five assists. And the news filtering out of Severn -- like Ryan's comments -- gets even better.
