Jesse Schwartzman (Pikesville, Johns Hopkins) made 12 saves and picked up an assist, and the host Denver Outlaws broke the then-Baltimore Bayhawks' Major League Lacrosse record for the best start to a season with a 16-7 win over the New York Lizards on Thursday at Sports Authority Field in Denver. The Outlaws improved to 10-0, surpassing the 2005 Bayhawks' 9-0 run on their way to the league title.The game set another MLL record: The announced crowd of 31,019 was the biggest ever at a professional outdoor lacrosse game.

Coming into the Federation of International Lacrosse World Championships, Team USA didn't display many holes, with a star-studded roster coached by a deep and talented staff. The reigning gold medalist from the 2010 world games, the U.S. team opened this year's event with a dominant 10-7 win over archrival Canada at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo. The U.S. national team got back to its winning ways against Germany with a 22-4 victory in the Federation of International Lacrosse world championships at the University of Manchester in England. Attackman Brendan Mundorf (UMBC) scored five goals and added three assists to pace 10 different scorers for the U.S., which was coming off a 10-9 loss to reigning world champion Canada. Ryan Powell , Drew Westervelt (UMBC) and Paul Rabil (Johns Hopkins) added three goals apiece.

Et cetera Walters scores four for Bayhawks in 18-11 win It took Joe Walters (Maryland) a couple of games to get reacclimated to the outdoor game after playing professional indoor lacrosse deep into May. The 10-year Major League Lacrosse veteran has found his comfort level, and that's good news for the Chesapeake Bayhawks. Walters went wild Saturday night, accumulating four goals and four assists to propel Chesapeake to an 18-11 victory over the Florida Launch at Florida Atlantic Stadium in Boca Raton.

• The NCAA Division II and III championship games will now be played at 4 and 7 p.m., respectively, on Memorial Day Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium. The later start results from the expiration of CBS College Sports' contract to broadcast the games, and the time slots no longer being tied to programming choices. As of right now, neither game will be televised, but both games will be available via live stream online. • The NCAA has given initial approval for the Division II tournament to expand to eight teams in the 2012-13 season.

Forward John Grant Jr. finished with three goals and two assists as the visiting Colorado Mammoth defeated the Minnesota Swarm, 16-14, on Saturday night before a season-high announced 12,243 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. The Mammoth (7-9), which led 8-7 at the half, clinched a National Lacrosse League playoff berth earlier in the evening when the Rochester Knighthawks defeated the Bandits in Buffalo. As the No. 4 seed, Colorado will visit the top-seeded Calgary Roughnecks in a semifinal next Saturday at Scotiabank Saddledome.

Lacrosse Ex-Terps coach Cottle joins Bayhawks as consultant Former Maryland and Loyola coach Dave Cottle has joined the Chesapeake Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse as a consultant, president Brendan Kelly announced Monday. Kelly, who took on the role of coach last week, said Cottle would advise the staff on topics ranging from player evaluation to game strategies. "This is huge for the Bayhawks, and it's huge for Major League Lacrosse," Kelly said. "We are fortunate that someone with Dave Cottle's expertise is willing to dedicate his time.

Lacrosse Bayhawks acquire Mundorf, deal Grant, Simon The Chesapeake Bayhawks acquired attackman Brendan Mundorf (UMBC, Mount St. Joseph) from the Denver Outlaws for attackman John Grant Jr. and defenseman Michael Simon (Stevenson, Fallston) and the 16th pick in the 2014 college draft, the Bayhawks announced Friday. "We have been trying to get Brendan for the last four years," coach Dave Cottle said. "He plays with great competitive toughness and we are reuniting him with his college teammate Drew Westervelt . " Mundorf, an Ellicott City native who was drafted 21st overall by Denver in 2006, has 229 goals and 118 assists in 90 games with the Outlaws.

In a game of two halves, the Bayhawks picked the wrong half. Chesapeake doomed itself with its worst first-half performance of the year Saturday night, letting up 11 unanswered goals before halftime. While the Bayhawks outscored Denver 8-3 after intermission, it was too little, too late. The Outlaws held on to defeat the Bayhawks 15-9 in front of an announced 8,517 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, bumping Chesapeake down to the fourth seed in the upcoming Major League Lacrosse playoffs.

Mundorf finished with three goals and three assists, while fellow attackman Matt Mackrides added two goals. Midfielder Kevin Buchanan (Calvert Hall) led Boston with seven goals on nine shots, including two power-play goals, as the Bayhawks were forced to turn to their bench in goal.
