When the Ravens signed veteran cornerbacks Aaron Ross and Dominique Franks last week after successful minicamp tryouts for both, it was viewed as even more unlikely that they'd make a serious run at Pro Bowl cornerback Brandon Flowers who had surprisingly been released by the Kansas City Chiefs. Looking to upgrade their cornerback depth, the Ravens had some conversations about adding Flowers, but ultimately others teams coveted the 28-year-old more. One of those teams, the San Diego Chargers, have agreed today to a one-year deal with Flowers, according to multiple reports.

The cornerback position was expected to be a strength for the Ravens this season, but they have gotten inconsistent performances from that group, Lardarius Webb and Corey Graham, in particular. The struggles of those two cornerbacks continued in Sunday's 24-18 loss to the Cleveland Browns, a game in which one-time third-string quarterback Jason Campbell threw for 262 yards and three touchdowns. Webb was targeted eight times by Campbell, who completed five of his eight attempts for 71 yards when throwing into his coverage area, according to Pro Football Focus.

A man, 25, was indicted yesterday on first-degree murder charges in the drive-by shooting death of Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams on New Year's Day 2007. Willie D. Clark faces 39 counts, including murder, attempted murder, assault, crimes of violence and a weapons violation, Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey said. Clark is in federal custody in a separate case. He was long considered a "person of interest" in Williams' slaying but is the first suspect to be indicted.

The Ravens see that Jimmy Smith can be a quality starting cornerback. They say he flashes that kind of ability every game. But they also see the moments when he gets caught out of place and gets stuck on somebody else's highlight reel. That inconsistency might drive you crazy, but the Ravens feel Smith is on the right track. Smith is in his third NFL season, and the cornerback position can sometimes have a steep learning curve. But expectations are elevated for cornerbacks who are selected in the first round of the draft.

College football Orange Bowl 8:15 p.m. [chs. 45, 5] When last we saw No. 8 Kansas (11-1), it was ending an 11-game winning streak and squandering an opportunity for a shot at a national championship in a 36-28 loss to Missouri. Conversely, No. 5 Virginia Tech (11-2) salvaged its season with a win over Boston College in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game, avenging an earlier loss to BC and punching Virginia Tech's ticket to this game. In the X's and O's matchup, it'll be Kansas' prolific passing attack vs. Virginia Tech's tough defense, which includes All-America cornerback Brandon Flowers.

It appears that the Ravens will be at full strength Sunday when they play the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.  For the second straight day, all the players were on the practice field, participating in some capacity. The injury report also did not change. Guard/tackle Jah Reid , who has yet to be active for a game this season because of a calf injury, was a limited participant. Wide receiver Torrey Smith (sprained ankle) was a full participant. Both players were on the practice field today and did not appear to be limited in any way. For the Chiefs, running back Peyton Hillis (ankle)

The weekend off after playing last Thursday obviously did the Ravens some good. All 53 players were practicing in some capacity today as the Ravens intensified preparations for Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Quarterback Joe Flacco and wide receiver Torrey Smith both sustained minor ankle sprains in the victory over the Cleveland Browns last Thursday and safety Ed Reed has been dealing with some hamstring soreness. However, all three were out there practicing today.
