On September 5, 2009, MILTON E. BRANCH, JR.; beloved husband of Bernice M. Branch; dear father of Milton Branch, III, Angela Hawkins and Venetia Latimer and her husband Jerome. Also survived by nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren and a host of family and friends. The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 13 from 1 to 4 P.M at the Howell Funeral Home, 4600 Liberty Heights Avenue, the Wake will be held on Monday, September 14 at 10 A.M at Emmanuel C.C. Church, Carrollton Avenue at Lanvale Street with funeral service to follow at 11 A.M. Interment Garrison Forest Veteran Cemetery.

Former collegiate scoring stars Adrian Branch of the University of Maryland and Mike Morrison of Loyola College were among five free agents signed by the Orlando Magic yesterday. All will report to training camp next week.Branch, 27, a 6-foot-7 forward, was a second-round draft choice of the Chicago Bulls in 1985, and was a member of five other NBA teams in a four-year career before being waived by the Minnesota Timberwolves in December 1989.Morrison, 24, a 6-4 guard, was chosen in the second round of the 1889 draft by the Phoenix Suns and spent one season there, averaging four minutes in 36 games.

Warren Branch, a city public works inspector, beat incumbent Vernon E. Crider in the District 13 City Council Democratic primary election by 51 votes, the city elections director said yesterday. Provisional and absentee ballots were tallied yesterday and sent to the State Board of Elections, said Armstead B.C. Jones, the elections director. The council race had been the only local contest in the Sept. 11 Democratic primary that was too close to call, though Branch led by a slim margin after the voting.

Taylor Branch's second narrative of the civil rights era, "Pillar of Fire: America in the King Years 1963-1965," has won the 1999 Silver Gavel Award from the American Bar Association.The book, published last year, is the second in a planned trilogy by the Baltimore historian. Branch has said that he "hopes to sustain his thesis that [Martin Luther] King's life is the best and most important metaphor for American history in the watershed post-war years."The ABA award goes annually to writers who best illustrate the legal system.
