Orioles first baseman Chris Davis and center fielder Adam Jones are among the leading American League votegetters at their positions through the first reporting of All-Star Game fan balloting figures, which were released Monday by Major League Baseball . Davis, who leads the majors with 20 homers, leads all AL first basemen with 1,176,016 votes, well ahead of second-place Prince Fielder of the Tigers. If he is voted in by the fans, he would become the first Orioles first baseman to earn a starting spot in the All-Star Game since Eddie Murray in 1985.

On the field: Cal Ripken came a few feet from hitting for the cycle for the second time in his career. He singled in the first, tripled in the third, doubled in the fifth and then one-hopped the right-center-field wall in the seventh. The only other Oriole to hit for the cycle besides Ripken was Brooks Robinson in 1960.In the dugout: With Brady Anderson leading off and Curtis Goodwin batting ninth, Orioles manager Phil Regan went back to his lineup that worked so well during the last homestand.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Orioles manager Ray Miller has a strong idea of what his Opening Day roster will be, but he is wrestling with the look of his batting order. Miller plans to keep Brady Anderson at leadoff and is leaning toward Roberto Alomar at No. 2.Miller said he is uncertain who will bat cleanup. Rafael Palmeiro will not be the everyday cleanup hitter, but rather one of several who may rotate in the spot. Joe Carter and Eric Davis are possibilities.Pub Date: 2/19/98

The list of guests at Washington Post sportswriter Dave Sheinin's wedding on Nov. 12 included former Orioles center fielder Brady Anderson, who grabbed a cross-country flight to Baltimore the previous night and was a huge hit at the reception. When's the last time "Brady Anderson" and "huge hit" appeared in the same sentence? I'll always appreciate Anderson's friendship during my early days on the beat. You had to crack his inner circle, but it was a fun place to be once you got there.

In 1964-65, Parkhurst did not issue hockey cards, and Topps' cards grew to 2 1/2 by 4 11/16 inches. The "Tall Boys" are coming back this month, but they'll be Parkies.Last year, Brian Price, president of Parkhurst, created the "Missing Link" set, his conception of what the 1956-57 cards would have looked like had Parkhurst chosen to issue a set that season. This year, he's chosen the "Tall Boy" concept for another set Parkhurst never made, cards for the '64-65 season (the last original Parkhurst set was 1963-64)
