ST. LOUIS -- The keystone of Loyola's 19-game unbeaten streak was a tough defense that came into its NCAA third-round game having allowed just five goals in its past 18 games. Not since Sept. 2 had a team scored more than one goal against the Greyhounds. Last night, however, Loyola ran into a Saint Louis University team that features the nation's leading goal scorer, Dipsy Selolwane, whohad scored at least two goals in all but two games this season. The 11th-ranked Greyhounds were able to hold off the Billikens, but only for a while.

COLLEGE PARK -- Greg Manning was not a natural when he played point guard for the University of Maryland basketball team in the late 1970s and early 1980s. His game was self-made by spending extra hours on the court after practice. So when the school's athletic department began a search five months ago for a new executive director for the M-Club, a group composed of former letter-winners who contribute mainly to the scholarship fund, Manning's name drew instant attention. He was selected to replace Jack Flynn, who retired.

You love how he plays and hate how he plays. You thrill to the rainbow jumpers and the fearless drives to the hole and the no-look passes. And you want to strangle him when he tries to force the ball inside or puts up a crazy shot with defenders draped all over him, as happens all too frequently. Oh, yeah, if you're a Maryland basketball fan, Greivis Vasquez drives you nuts. And maybe because of this, you end up over-analyzing everything about him. What's with the hair?

COLLEGE PARK - Lefty Driesell is more than 26 years and 220 miles removed from Maryland's men's basketball program. At 81, the former coach doesn't get to many games anymore. But from his condo in Virginia Beach, Va., Driesell thinks about his Maryland days often - partly because of his lingering affection for the school and partly because he never seemed to find proper closure after being forced out in 1986 following the cocaine-induced death of star player Len Bias. Some of Driesell's former players have kept their distance from the school because they believe he never received his due for the 348 wins and other accomplishments during his 17 seasons as head coach.

At a little past five o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, darkness began to interrupt practice when Loyola men's soccer coach Mark Mettrick announced the next goal would be the winner. A couple of shots were sprayed wide and another was stopped when it was halfway across the goal line. Sometime later, when it was much darker, Niall Lepper cleanly struck a half volley to finally end the session. It was obvious just how much the Greyhounds were treasuring the fact that, here it is after Thanksgiving, and they're still playing ball.
