Kevin Flynn Marriotts Ridge Flynn led the Mustangs to their fourth consecutive Class 2A state championship, joining Pocomoke, River Hill and Wilde Lake as the only boys soccer programs in Maryland history to win four straight titles. Marriotts Ridge dominated Queen Anne's, 4-0, last month at UMBC Stadium to win this year's title. The Mustangs finished the season with a 17-0 record, extending their unbeaten streak to 24 games. "Every state title is hard, you don't take any of them for granted," Flynn said.

McDonogh didn't look far or long to find its new boys soccer coach. Assistant Brandon Quaranta will take over for longtime coach Steve Nichols, who was named the new men's coach at Loyola University on Wednesday. Quaranta, a standout player at Archbishop Curley and Hofstra, has been an assistant under Nichols since 2006. “Obviously, in the last 20 years Steve has been able to establish one of the best programs in the country,” Quaranta said. “He's attracted unbelievable student-athletes who have represented the school amazingly and performed incredibly on the field.

Legendary boys soccer coach Don Shea, who guided Oakland Mills to eight states titles in 18 seasons before stepping down in 2003, will return to coach the Scorpions next fall. Shea has remained at the school as a social studies teacher and now gets the chance to coach alongside his son, Trevor, who is the program's junior varsity coach. "Obviously, his resume speaks for itself," said Oakland Mills athletic director Troy Stevenson. "All along, he has been teaching at the school, so the kids like him and respect him. Coming back, there's a high level of excitement, and he brings instant credibility back to the program.

­­McDonogh boys soccer coach Steve Nichols has been selected the 2013 Boys Private/Parochial School National Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Nichols led the No. 1  Eagles (20-0-1) to the program's seventh Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship and its first unbeaten season. McDonogh finished as the country's No. 1 team in the Students Sports Fab 50 Poll and No. 10 nationally in the NSCAA Adidas Poll.

Broadneck High School athletic director Ken Kazmarek announced yesterday the hiring of Jonathan Braun as head coach of the boys soccer team.Braun, a former head coach at Southern High in Harwood, will replace Kevin McMullen, who resigned last month to take a teaching/coaching position at Thomas Johnson Middle/High School in Frederick County.McMullen, the only boys soccer coach Broadneck has had since opening in 1982, coached the Bruins to a 91-35-10 record in his tenure, reaching the state Class 4A finals in 1990.

Archbishop Spalding has named John Coppola its new boys soccer coach. Coppola, a 1995 Spalding graduate who went on to Loyola, spent the past three years coaching the Cavaliers' junior varsity team. He replaces former coach Chris Johnson. Coppola played soccer at Spalding and was an assistant for the varsity team from 1996 to 1998. "I am excited about the opportunity to coach my alma mater in the MIAA A Conference," Coppola said. "I look forward to preparing the men's soccer program for the challenges the league presents day in and day out."

Coach of the Year Majid Mirza St. Paul's The first-year head coach had the daunting task of getting the Crusaders ready to play in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A conference this season after moving up from the B conference. St. Paul's shook up the traditional hierarchy of the league by finishing in second place with a 14-4-1 record. The Crusaders also advanced to the title game against top-ranked McDonogh, where they fell in the final minute of regulation.

Varsity Letters caught up with legendary Calvert Hall soccer coach Bill Karpovich, who will be honored Friday during halftime of the school's home varsity soccer game against Mount Saint Joseph. Karpovich coached from 1967 to 1997 and finished with a 422-85-33 career record and 19 championships in the Maryland Scholastic Association and Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association. He also taught math at Calvert Hall from 1967-2001 and was the department chair from 1968 to 1987.

St. Mary's named two new coaches for fall sports today, according to a news release from the school. Frank Richard takes over as the school's football coach, while Chris Hennings joins the Saints as the boys soccer coach. Richard, a graduate of Johns Hopkins and native of New Orleans, spent the past five years as the offensive and defensive line coach at Calvert Hall. He also previously served in the same role at Cardinal Gibbons. "I am honored and excited to lead St Mary's football," Richard said in the news release.

When Centennial boys soccer coach Jim Zehe first arrived at the Ellicott City school as a student teacher in 1995, the program under then-coach Bill Stara was one of the tops in the state. That year, the Eagles won their seventh state crown and fourth in five years. Now, in Zehe's ninth year as coach, he has the kind of team that resembles those powerhouse squads of the past. The No. 8 Eagles are 10-0 so far this season with a deep and experienced roster that has shown incredible chemistry.

Don Gregg, the Severna Park boys soccer coach recently named National Soccer Coach of the Year by the National Federation of Soccer Coaches, is considering retirement as a physical education teacher at the end of this school year, but he definitely will coach the Falcons one more season. "Don told me he wanted to coach one more season, which will be his 30th, but will probably retire as a teacher," said Severna Park athletic director Wayne Mook. Gregg said he has bought a house in Florida "contingent upon us selling our house [in Pasadena]"

The Liberty boys soccer team, coached by Lee Kestler, is heading for its sixth playoff appearance in the past nine years. And its coach never played the game.Kestler, who took over at Liberty in 1984, played several sports, but soccer was not one of them. When his young son showed an interest in soccer, Kestler taught himself about the game.Liberty, which lost to Class 2A state co-champion Rockville in last year's state semifinal, has made the playoffs four straight years. Annapolis Area Christian School is seeking a varsity boys' soccer a a junior varsity girls' volleyball coach for the 2012 fall season.  The soccer position is part time with the possibility of becoming a full-time teacher-coach position depending on the academic openings at the school this spring.  Playing and coaching experience are required. The volleyball position is part time with coaching experience preferred.
