Boys' Latin, No. 1 in both the Inside Lacrosse and Baltimore Sun polls, was sorely tested Tuesday by Culver Academy (Indiana). The host Lakers twice fell behind by two goals in the fourth quarter before using a 4-0 run to sprint past the Eagles to win, 11-9. Boys' Latin coach Bob Shriver described Culver Academy (1-1) as "not very deep but very talented" and credited the play of Culver goalie Michael Calvello (12 saves) in the first half, which ended in a 2-2 tie. The game was tied at 5 at the start of the fourth quarter.

A four-year starter and captain, the All-Metro catcher had a near-perfect week at the plate to lead the No. 1 Cardinals (5-1) to four wins. Murphy was productive in 15 of his 16 plate appearances during the four games, going 10-for-11 (.909) with four walks and a sacrifice fly. He had six extra-base hits - three doubles and three triples - and 13 RBIs. In Thursday's 15-5 win over Archbishop Spalding, Murphy was 3-for-3 with a single, double, triple and seven RBIs. Murphy, who has committed to Wake Forest, is batting .714 with a 1.357 slugging percentage so far this season.

The No. 2 Boys' Latin lacrosse team has done what only one other team, St. Paul's, has been able to do this season: hand Hill Academy (Canada) a loss. The Lakers (5-0) were down 9-8 with four minutes to go and scored three goals and gave up only one to win, 11-10, Friday night. T. Moyer led Boys' Latin with three goals. The Pride (8-2) have been playing the top teams in the Mid-Atlantic region for the past two weeks. "We had a really good lead, but it was back-and-forth the whole game," Lakers coach Bob Shriver said.

Varsity Sandusky retires from Boys' Latin ice hockey Jim Sandusky has formally announced his retirement as Boys' Latin ice hockey coach effective Feb. 28 after a decade of leading the program, according to a news release from the school. Sandusky will continue with the Lakers football program as the associative head coach and offensive coordinator. During the past two seasons, he led the Lakers varsity ice hockey team to runner-up status in 2013 and to a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association BConference championship in 2012.

Senior left-hander Andrew Witczak pitched a one-hitter over six innings as No. 1 Calvert Hall routed visiting John Carroll, 9-0, in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Athletic A Conference baseball opener for both schools Tuesday. Robbie Jones was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs for the Cardinals, while Alex Murphy was 3-for-3 with a triple. Boys lacrosse Boys' Latin 13, Gonzaga (D.C.) 4: Colin Heacock scored five goals and Shack Stanwick had a goal and four assists to lead the host Lakers (4-0)

1 Team to repeat as Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference champions since the league's first title game in 1996. Loyola is the only program to win back-to-back championships (2007 and 2008). No. 1 Calvert Hall will try to become the second this season. 8 State championships won overall by five-time defending champion Hereford, which ties the Bulls with Dulaney for the most among public schools in state history. Hereford also established a new mark for consecutive titles with its 13-8 win over Glenelg in the Class 3A-2A title game last season.

The No. 3 Mount St. Joseph basketball team got a tough draw, DeMatha of Hyattsville, in the second round of the Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament. The Stags (13-17) lost by one point to La Lumiere (Indiana), nationally ranked No. 8 by USA Today, on Thursday. But a hot-shooting Gaels squad won, 80-68, Friday night. "We shot the ball really well," coach Pat Clatchey said. "Anytime you score 80 points, you have a good chance to win. " Ohio State-bound Kameron Williams led the Gaels with 26 points, and Phil Booth added 16. Mount St. Joseph will face a familiar foe, No. 2 St. Frances, in today's consolation championship at 4:45 p.m. Mount St. Joseph has gone 0-3 against the Panthers.

No. 2 St. Frances, the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference champion, was one of three teams to have two players selected as All-MIAA this season. Panthers seniors Maurice White and Tevon Saddler made the team. No. 3 Mount St. Joseph (senior Kameron Williams and junior Phil Booth) and No. 7 Archbishop Spalding (senior Earl Potts and junior Jourdan Grant) were the other teams to have two players honored. Calvert Hall sophomore Drew Edwards, Glenelg Country senior Warren Powers, No. 9 John Carroll senior Rodney Elliott and McDonogh senior B.J. Andrews were also selected.
