The Poly boys basketball team needed some time to get comfortable in the Class 4A state semifinal at the University of Maryland's Comcast Center on Thursday night. Going against defending state champion Magruder, it was time the No. 10 Engineers simply couldn't afford. Falling behind early, the Engineers did all they could to climb back, but the Colonels had more than enough answers to come away with a 62-50 win. The Engineers' offensive struggles led to the loss as they only shot 24 percent from the field and made only two of 16 from behind the 3-point line.

The No. 10 Arundel boys basketball team knew the Class 4A East regional final at North Point was going to be a tough, physical game and it was. Both teams had a player foul out in a game that featured 68 fouls, but the one-two scoring combination of Matt Bonds (26 points) and Anthony Williams (21) was too much for the Wildcats, who fell, 89-64, Friday night. "Their pressure tired our guys out," Arundel coach Jeff Starr said. "We eventually broke the press, but our shots weren't falling.

No. 1 Dunbar comfortably found its way back to a familiar place Thursday, wrapping up the Class 1A South region with a 67-44 win over Ben Franklin-Masonville. The win sends the three-time defending state champions back to the state semifinals next week. The Poets (24-2) will be making their 19th state tournament appearance with sights on a record 15th championship.  They are currently tied with Allegany for most in Maryland history with 14.  Dunbar used a 9-0 run in the first quarter to build a 24-point halftime lead.  Reserves Montaque Wright and Keshawn Hampton played lead roles with 13 points each.  Daxter Miles also had 13 and Kamau Stokes finished with 11.  "It's always our goal to get to Comcast [Center, where the semifinals begin Thursday]

Tavi Thomas ended the Oakland Mills dream of a perfect season Thursday night. Thomas drilled a 3-pointer with nine seconds left that gave visiting Calvert a come-from-behind 69-67 victory over No. 6 Oakland Mills in the Class 2A South region championship. Oakland Mills entered the game as the only unbeaten public school team left in the state - for boys - and the Scorpions finished with a 24-1 record. Oakland Mills was trying to make the state final four for the first time in 12 years, and a state championship would have meant the Scorpions did it with a perfect record.

Edmondson boys basketball coach Darnell Dantzler was caught in the moment Thursday night at Randallstown, emotionally accepting one hug after the next while his players were in the background loudly celebrating. In the past four years, the Red Storm had successful seasons come to an end in the region championship game with each opponent going on to win the state championship. But this time, it was Edmondson's turn. This time, it was seniors Darius Walker and Isaiah Tripp and Darius Hubbard and Myrek Lee-Fowlkes making big plays, hitting important shots and making clutch free throws at the end to lead the No. 5 Red Storm to a 73-63 win over Randallstown to claim the Class 2A North region championship.

The winter storm that's passing through the state today has yet to postpone any of the boys basketball regional championship games, which are still set to take place for Thursday and Friday. However, it is impacting preparations, particularly for the Class 2A and 1A games that are scheduled for Thursday. Four of the seven regional title games scheduled for Thursday involve Baltimore-area teams, and with school closed today, each won't have the opportunity to practice after semifinal wins on Tuesday.
