WASHINGTON -- With his deep brown eyes, slick raps and practiced tough-guy scowl, Bow Wow has become such a hip-hop playa that he's sold almost 3.5 million albums, shared the stage with Madonna during the Grammy Awards and now stars in a new basketball movie. He's got cash; he's got a heavy Mickey Mouse pendant encrusted with diamonds, and he's got hordes of screaming female fans to complete the bad-boy lifestyle. And in March, he turned 15. By all appearances, Bow Wow's rap and movie career is off to a good start.

SUN SCORE *** Like Mike is a sure-fire heart-warmer: lively and funny yet emotion-charged and uplifting. This family friendly movie, about a little kid who ends up a star on an NBA team, soars above so many sports comedies because director John Schultz and writers Michael Elliot and Jordan Moffet aim as high as the basketball hoops that figure so importantly in their story. They consistently set off the fast-moving fantasy action on the basketball court with the reality of a father-son relationship that develops in fits and starts and no small amount of anguish, even given considerable humor.

Audiences looking for movies aimed at African-Americans, but not mired in the mean streets where Hollywood usually relegates its black characters, need look no further than Roll Bounce, a frothy, nostalgia-tinged look at being young and finding all the happiness you need in a pair of roller skates and a bunch of good friends. Bow Wow, old enough to drop the Lil' from his name but still young enough to look cool on roller skates, is Xavier, better known as X, a kid from Chicago's South Side growing up in the early '80s and living to show off at the local rink.
