Chris Davis homered in the fourth inning - a two-run shot that was his fourth in his past three games. It also was his 30th of the season - something he has never done as a big leaguer, although he reached the milestone in the minors before. Davis is the second Oriole to get to 30 this season, joining Adam Jones, who has 32. It's the sixth time in Orioles history that teammates have hit 30 or more homers in a season. The others: J.J. Hardy and Mark Reynolds (2011); Brady Anderson and Rafael Palmeiro (1996)

With the start of the minor-league baseball season comes ridiculous ballpark promotions, and this summer, I can't see anyone touching what the Reading Phillies have come up with. They are giving away a life-size Ryan Howard garden gnome to one insanely lucky fan at tonight's home opener. No, I'm not making this up . This got me thinking about which Orioles player of past or present I would want to defend my lawn (well, assuming I had a lawn). Of the current group of Orioles, it would be hard to top showcasing a giant Vladimir Guerrero with a white beard and triangle hat in my front yard.

Move over, Boog. Make room for Tom Matte. In what is becoming a sort of gastronomical Hall of Fame for retired Baltimore athletes, Matte, a former Colts running back, will be shoulder to shoulder with ex-Orioles great Boog Powell when Camden Yards opens next month.Powell will be back for the second year, signing autographs and selling his popular barbecue sandwiches off a grill on the Eutaw Street pavilion between the stadium and adjacent B&O warehouse.Matte will be right next to him, selling platters of St. Louis-style ribs.

Pit beef, top round grilled over charcoal, thinly sliced and served on a kaiser roll often with horseradish, is part of the summer Maryland landscape. It is our indigenous barbecue, a dish rarely found outside the state. Figuring that you should never be too far away from a good sandwich, I made a pit-beef tour of the Baltimore area. I wanted to chart a mental map, so that whatever direction I headed I would have a quick path to a juicy two-fisted meal. I passed by the stands run by Boog Powell at Camden Yards and Andy Nelson's Barbecue on York Road in Cockeysville.

Monday night: The Orioles played their first regular-season game since the 1972 season with "Baltimore" on their road jerseys. The announcement: After years of clamoring by fans, the Orioles announced in November that they would put "Baltimore" back on the team's road jerseys. They unveiled the new jerseys at the Gallery at Harborplace, using Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, Jeremy Guthrie and other players as models. Why now?: After 11 straight losing seasons, the club needed a public relations boost, and with the Nationals in Washington, the Orioles have less claim to a regional fan base.
