BOWIE -- Frustration was the order of the game for the Bowie Baysox yesterday. They left the bases loaded three times, the last in the ninth inning, and left 11 stranded overall to fall to the Reading Phillies, 4-2, in Eastern League play at Prince George's Stadium.A boisterous crowd of 5,783 -- mostly children from day camps -- had thinned considerably after a 43-minute rain delay interceded with the bases full and one out in the bottom of the ninth. When play resumed, left-hander Robert Dodd entered to face Chris Kirgan, who popped out. Then, Keith Troutman finished off Bowie (39-37)

After watching Old Mill's Joe Barnes and Brian Bogle hit, run and field impressively yesterday in a driving, bitterly cold wind that stirred up snow flurries at Broadneck, one has to wonder what these two talented players will do once real baseball weather gets here.Barnes and Bogle were in the middle of almost everything for a very good Old Mill team that turned back the defending state class 3A champion Broadneck Bruins, 6-2, in the season-opener for both teams.Barnes drove in one run with a ringing double to deep left-center in the fifth inning, manufactured another run in the fourth with his speed and made all three of his putouts in center field look easy.

Playing without spectators is not what county boys basketball champion Broadneck (16-6) had in mind for its 3A East quarterfinal at Edmondson on Tuesday. No spectators will be allowed. An incident involving gunfire during the Dunbar-at-Edmondson game Wednesday in which no one was injured or arrested has led to the precaution.Broadneck parents and fans are not happy about it, to say the least."The whole thing is unfortunate," said Broadneck assistant athletic director Tim McMullen, who said he had many calls from concerned parents Friday.

His love is basketball and baseball is in his blood.Choosing between the two sports is impossible for Glen Burnie High's gifted senior athlete Desmond Dailey. When he's raining threes on an opponent and scoring as many as 47 points in a game, basketball comes first for the 6-foot-2 Dailey. When he's batting .380 and playing left field for the Gophers, baseball is his passion."My dad tells me to play the sports I love and he'll support me whichever sport I choose down the road," said Dailey.

It may not be the question of the ages, but two fund executives are attempting to end the long-standing debate about which is better, stock index funds or actively managed stock funds.Robert Markman, president of Markman Capital Management, contends that investors can beat the market indexes by putting their faith and money in mutual funds. His three new investments are "funds of funds," which buy funds that Mr. Markman says will outperform their peers. Since February his Markman Multifund Trust, with three portfolios of funds, has attracted $45 million.
