Versatility was supposed to provide the Orioles a different hero every night.Last night they made one out of Kevin Stocker.A bantamweight hitter within a previously underwhelming lineup, the Tampa Bay shortstop became the catalyst for the Devil Rays' 6-3 win over the Orioles before an announced crowd of 39,853 at Camden Yards.Supposedly punchless against right-handed pitching, Stocker tormented Orioles powerball starter Scott Erickson. Allegedly a spot where rallies go to die, the Rays' No. 9 hitter reached base in three of four plate appearances and executed a deflating squeeze bunt in his fourth.

Some major-league clubs have decided to sit out the free-agent hunt until January, hoping the dearth of activity will lower salary demands. Others are sitting it out to wait to see what economic system will govern the game, thus protecting themselves from having to pay penalties for overspending. The Orioles, meanwhile, continue to talk to free agents, but are undecided as to how quickly they will take the next step actually to sign players.Free-agent pitchers Bill Swift (with the San Francisco Giants in 1994)

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Orioles packed their bags and chugged off to Anaheim last night. Things already were looking up. No way El Nino can be as bad as this weekend's El Stinko pitching.Jimmy Key took his turn against the Texas Rangers. He got 11 outs and surrendered 10 hits, a combination that made the Orioles' 11-7 loss deceptively close. The trend continues. Not since Mike Mussina cracked a wart on his right index finger last Thursday has anything good happened to a once airtight starting rotation.
