I thought that only Barack Obama could make me yearn for a Hillary Clinton presidency. Alas I was wrong, or at least not as inclusive as my progressive friends think I should be. If indeed Gov. Martin O'Malley runs for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination, I can only hope that Hillary wraps up the nomination quickly enough that I won't have to endure months and months of Mr. O'Malley's bashing of President George W. Bush ("Session over, O'Malley...

Do you think it is possible that your editorial writers will ever get it through their seemingly impenetrable skulls that neither the state nor the city nor - heaven forbid - miscalculating bureaucrats ever pay for their mistakes? Taxpayers do. It is one thing to say that homeowners who benefited from miscalculated historic property tax credits should not be billed for past miscalculations, and that taxpayers should not bear the cost of those mistakes ( "Doing what's fair on the historic tax credit," Aug. 5)

Sequestration is an extremely crude way to cut approximately 2 percent of federal spending. It is analogous to forcing a grossly obese person to lose a few pounds by not feeding him for a few days. On this issue, at least, it appears that Republicans and Democrats agree. So, one would think that the boys and girls who brought us the idea of sequestration (President Barack Obama, a Democrat, from whose White House the concept of sequestration arose, the Democratically-controlled Senate and the Republican-controlled House)

A recent article about the Maryland Court of Appeals decision striking down most of the $1.65 billion judgment against ExxonMobil Corp. for a 2006 underground gasoline leak in Baltimore County quoted homeowner Hans Wilhelmsen, whose family had been awarded some $60 million in damages, as saying that "nobody was looking for some sort of enormous payout, but just wanted to protect the asset" ("Fraud verdict in leak struck," Feb. 27). The article did not disclose how many properties the Wilhemsen family owns, but he obviously lives in the priciest section of Baltimore County if it takes $60 million to "protect the asset.

Your editorial on the apparent murder-suicide Involving Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher and his girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, noted approvingly sportscaster Bob Costas' opinion that "if Jovan Belcher didn't possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today" ("The tragedy of Jovan Belcher," Dec. 4). Yet consider some other gun-related homicide news: A 41-year-old Dutch man working as a linesman at a youth soccer game, was shot to death by a group of teenage players.

If the Social Security "problem is relatively easy to solve" ("Social Security sets off sparks," Sept. 13), why hasn't our brilliant, Nobel laureate president offered a solution? Isn't leadership about offering solutions to problems, especially ones that are "relatively easy to solve?" Bob Price, Lutherville

Leave it to The Sun to mock Mitt Romney's voluntary effort to include women in his administration as governor of Massachusetts ("The binding of women," Oct. 18). Must any affirmative action to include women be mandated by government to satisfy The Sun's editorial board? Oh, wait? I get it. If the government had mandated Mr. Romney's action, then our president could have told Mr. Romney: "You didn't build - I mean do - that. " Bob Price, Lutherville

Once again, The Sun urges the institution of public campaign financing, implying that if such a plan were instituted, private campaign contributions would disappear and we'd all live happily ever after ("Appearance of conflict," Nov. 29). Nothing could be further from the truth. For one thing, there is that pesky First Amendment. For another, as our president demonstrated in his 2008 campaign, if you have enough private contributions, you can finance a campaign very nicely without utilizing public financing.
