At this time of year, Barbara and Bob Johnson's home often is filled with teen-aged runners.On Saturday mornings, the whole C. Milton Wright cross country clan comes over to run hills, have breakfast and watch cartoons.Maybe those road runner cartoons are the secret to the Mustangs' success. After all, the boys and girls teams won county titles this year.More likely, however, the success has something to do with the coaching.Since Bob Johnson took over the boys team six years ago, the Mustangs never have lost the county title.

NBA commissioner David Stern expects Michael Jordan to be approved as majority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats by the end of next month. Stern released a statement Saturday saying he was "pleased" the former NBA superstar had reached a deal to buy the money-losing team from Bob Johnson. Stern anticipates an expedited approval process by the league's owners. Jordan has declined to comment after striking a deal late Friday. Jordan has been a part-owner of the Bobcats with the final say on basketball decisions.

CALGARY, Alberta -- Theoren Fleury scored a goal and added three assists as the Calgary Flames beat Los Angeles 5-3 last night, handing the Kings their first loss in five games.Paul Ranheim, Gary Roberts, Robert Reichel and Mark Habscheid also scored for the Flames, 2-3-2 over the past seven games. Habscheid and Reichel both scored on the power play.Tony Granato scored two goals and Jari Kurri had a power-play goal for the Kings, who outshot Calgary 26-23. Wayne Gretzky picked up three assists.

Since Bob Johnson arrived at C. Milton Wright six years ago the Mustangs' boys cross country team has always won the Harford County championship.This fall, the Mustangs so dominated the county that they placed seven runners in the top eight spots at the championship meet.Johnson, The Baltimore Sun's All-Metro Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year, guided them to the area's most successful season.The Mustangs never lost to a local team. They dropped only two meets the entire season -- the Harford Invitational to Class 4A powerhouse Quince Orchard and the Class 3A state championship to Walt Whitman.

Winning the only category for which he was nominated, a 17-year-old Liberty High School senior was voted best crew member Friday night atCarroll Community Television Channel 55's 2nd annual Vollie Awards.Amid magic, music and mirth, Jeff Mather took one of four Vollie Awards voted on by the volunteer producers of the community access channel. The event, attended by nearly 100 people, was held at the Wakefield Valley Golf Club."Being only 17, this means a lot," Mather said.The best crew member award was based on the person's production ability and skills,the number of programs worked on and overall contribution to the success of Channel 55.The son of Larry and Betty Mather of Eldersburg, Mather said he became involved with Channel 55 after seeing the group in action during a kick-off celebration two years ago at Cranberry Mall.

COLLEGE PARK - The University of Maryland's athletic department has gained a new corporate partner in Nextel Communications. Nextel and Maryland yesterday announced a 10-year agreement in which Nextel will become the official wireless communications sponsor for athletics on the College Park campus. The company will invest $6.7 million over the agreement's duration. Nextel will get extensive visibility within the new Comcast Center, the future home of the school's men's and women's basketball teams, and in Byrd Stadium, where the football and men's lacrosse teams play.

Bob Johnson of Marriottsville, a rheumatology account manager with the biotechnology company Amgen, was appointed vice chair of the board of directors of the Arthritis Foundation's Maryland chapter. He was recognized at the chapter's recent annual meeting at Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville. Loraine Reddington of Dayton was presented with the Outstanding Service Award, and Jennifer Lyons-Keefe of Ellicott City received the Legs in the Community Award for her work with the chapter's 2007 5K Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis.

When Oakland's Geronimo Berroa hit his 35th homer last weekend, he and Mark McGwire, who had 46 at the time, set a club record for most homers by teammates. McGwire and Jose Canseco set the record in 1987, when that duo hit 80. The major-league record is 115, by Mickey Mantle (54) and Roger Maris (61) of the 1961 New York Yankees.Cleveland finished the year 7-17 against Texas and New York, the other two division leaders.When Mike Greenwell drove in nine runs in Boston's 9-8 win over Seattle on Monday, he broke a record held by Bob Johnson, who drove in eight in the Philadelphia Athletics' 8-0 win over St. Louis on June 12, 1938.
