Blumberg

For the last decade and a half, David R. Blumberg has been one of Baltimore's foremost champions of lost causes.Next month, two weeks after the election, Blumberg is stepping down after 16 years as head of the city's Republican Party. That's 16 years without a Republican elected to the City Council. Sixteen years without a Republican elected to the General Assembly. Sixteen years without a Republican elected sheriff, court clerk or register of wills. The lack of GOP success in an overwhelmingly Democratic city is nothing new -- no Republican has been elected in Baltimore since Theodore R. McKeldin won the mayoralty in 1963 -- and is not likely to change on Nov. 3. Of 31 State House seats in districts solely or predominantly in the city, Republican candidates filed for just five, and no Republicans are running for any courthouse jobs.

THIS region needs more citizens like David R. Blumberg. He is one of those people who, year after year, gives of his time and energy for causes that make a difference in others' lives. On Tuesday, he steps down as chairman of the city's Republican Party after 16 years. It's a thankless task, given the lopsided number of Democrats in Baltimore, but Mr. Blumberg has worked mightily to lay the groundwork for an alternative political voice in the city. He's been a voice of moderation in state party affairs, defending the city elections board against unfounded charges of voter fraud in 1994.

A federal judge ordered a 47-year-old Baltimore man to prison for almost five years yesterday for tricking sports fans into sending their personal credit card information to fake ticket-sales companies. U.S. District Judge Andre M. Davis sentenced Stuart Blumberg to 57 months in prison for his part in the conspiracy. Davis also ordered Blumberg to pay almost $300,000 in restitution. According to the statement of facts presented at his guilty plea in November, Blumberg, Bruce Schein and several others placed newspaper and magazine advertisements from 1999 until 2004, saying they had tickets for sale to sporting events.
