Sister Mary Aurelia Benedetto, a member of the Sisters of Mercy who used her skills as an educator and an administrator working with the poor and the elderly of Baltimore, died Nov. 23 at Columbus Regional Medical Center in Georgia of complications from a fall. She was 86. Sister Mary Aurelia, who had lived since 2003 at The Villa, an assisted-living facility in the Woodbrook section of Baltimore County that her order shares with the Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart, had been visiting friends in Columbus at the time of her fall.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Fulfilling a 36-year journey to sainthood, Pope John Paul II has set a date to canonize Mother Katharine Drexel, a Philadelphia heiress who dedicated her life to opening schools for American blacks and Indians. "Catholics everywhere, and especially in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, will rejoice at this news," Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua, the archbishop of Philadelphia, said in making the announcement recently. He said the canonization would take place Oct. 1 at St. Peter's Square in the Vatican.

Doris Denby, a retired social studies teacher, died Saturday at Union Memorial Hospital of complications after surgery. The Baltimore resident was 63.She retired in 1982 from the William H. Lemmel Junior High School after 28 years of teaching in the Baltimore public school system.She also taught Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes at Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church.She was born Doris Tyson in Ansonville, N.C., and came to Baltimore as a child. She graduated with honors from Douglass High School and Morgan State University and did graduate work at Columbia University.

Helen E. O'Neill, a retired social worker and longtime Guilford resident, died of complications from Alzheimer's disease Nov. 1 at Keswick Multi-Care Center. She was 85. Helen E. Hausamann was born in New York City and raised in Union City, N.J. She was a 1941 graduate of Emerson High School. She worked as a sales associate at Macy's department store in Herald Square and as a licensed practical nurse before her marriage in 1946 to Lawrence Richard O'Neill. "When she was working at Macy's, she bumped into Greta Garbo one day in the elevator," said a daughter, Siobhan O'Neill of Eldersburg.

Mabel was a longtime employee of the Carnegie Institute of Washington; beloved wife of the late George E. Mattingly, Sr.; devoted mother of George E. Mattingly, Jr., Paul H. Mattingly, James E. Mattingly and Marilyn "Lynn" T. Mattingly; sister of Adele Jones and Lola Whiteside. Also survived by nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
