Looking for a vulnerability of any sort, Tim Paul got his wish. The sophomore attackman's hard shot from 10 yards helped the No. 4 Navy men's lacrosse team solve Bucknell junior goalkeeper Matt Antonelli and edge the No. 16 Bison, 4-3, in overtime yesterday at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. Antonelli, an Archbishop Spalding graduate who replaced starter Nick Sciubba early in the second quarter, had surrendered just one goal in regulation and made 10 saves. But with 1:20 left in overtime, Paul took a pass from senior attackman Nick Mirabito and scored on a high shot.

Towson coach Pat Kennedy looked across the scorers' table at the Bucknell bench last night at Towson Center and saw a team that would serve as a good model for his Tigers. The Bison are one of the more successful mid-major programs, winning at least 22 games in each of the past three seasons and reaching the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2005 and 2006. The Tigers were able to control small stretches of last night's game with their athleticism, but Bucknell's clutch shooting was the difference in the Bison's 71-57 victory before an announced 2,097.

Paul Hines, who was known as the "Buffalo Man" because of a bison herd he kept on his Churchville farm, died of cancer Oct. 13 at his residence. He was 77. Born in Omaha, Neb., and raised in Alliance, he served in the Army during the Korean War and retired after 20 years as a Signal Corps photo officer and instructor. He moved to Maryland in 1968 and worked part-time as a postal carrier in Bel Air and a clerk in Churchville. Family members said Mr. Hines raised bison for 25 years on the 60-acre Cedarvale Farm, which had been in his wife's family since the mid-1860s.

ANNAPOLIS -- Navy is nine years removed from its last appearance in the NCAA tournament. Bucknell won a game there 11 months ago. Two programs that recently have viewed the Patriot League from opposite ends met at Alumni Hall last night. Despite having one of their premier players out indefinitely with a broken hand, the Bison posted a 78-63 win over the Midshipmen. Navy (11-12, 1-7 Patriot League) lost its fifth consecutive game, while Bucknell (14-8, 8-1) won its sixth straight since a loss at Holy Cross, the Patriot League leader.

As thunder rumbled in the distance and gray clouds formed over Trey Lewis' small farm in northern Baltimore County yesterday, he led two visitors to a field enclosed by an electric fence. On the other side sat a baby bison, not more than 40 pounds, with fluffy reddish-brown hair. Several adult bison roamed around it. Upon hearing footsteps, the beasts glanced over and then galloped into a forest, where they stayed until the visitors made their way back up a hill and into Lewis' store. "Sometimes if you get too close to them, they'll start pawing the ground, stomping their feet," Lewis said.

DALLAS -- Take whatever message you want from Memphis after two games in the NCAA tournament, because the Tigers care only that you understand this: They're still playing, and they like the way they're doing it. The Tigers reached the regional semifinals with yesterday's 72-56 handling of Bucknell at American Airlines Center, a triumph that provided ever more evidence why they deserved the No. 1 seed in the Oakland Regional. Up next is Missouri Valley upstart Bradley on Thursday at the Arena in Oakland.
