With mostly soft and a few hard questions, Maryland Episcopalians gently probed the beliefs and personalities of their five nominees for bishop the past two days, with the result that some theological differences among the candidates have emerged.Only one, the Very Rev. Gustave J. Weltsek Jr., dean of St. John's Cathedral in Jacksonville, Fla., waded into controversy without being pushed at an open forum Saturday night in Severna Park.Volunteering that he wanted the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland to know precisely where he stood concerning a question on people's minds even if it weren't being asked -- whether he favors ordaining gays and lesbians -- Dean Weltsek said, "I feel very strongly about the place of the General Convention in the life of the church."

Bishop P. Francis Murphy, auxiliary bishop for Baltimore, is now wearing a less comfortable label -- dissenter. But contrary to much popular thinking, dissenters have an important place in the rich history of the Roman Catholic Church. After all, no institution could survive for two millenniums in lock-step agreement, particularly one that treasures its presence and influence around the globe. But viewed in light of current pressures for Catholics to conform, Bishop Murphy's article in the September 25 issue of Commonweal magazine is bound to make him a hero to some Catholics and a heretic to others.

The Episcopal bishop of Easton has told an elderly Maryland priest he may no longer preach or perform the sacraments because he blessed the union of two homosexual men in an Eastern Shore ceremony that had all the trappings of a wedding. The deposed priest, the Rev. John K. Mount, said yesterday that he took part in the May 28 ceremony -- specifically praying for God's strength and comfort for the two gay men -- largely out of compassion because both are dying of AIDS.He did not perform a "marriage" as such, the priest said, although the two men considered their vows of faithfulness to each other to be the equivalent of a marriage.
