A few memories from my childhood are now just that. But the house I remember is still there. It was my grandparents' house, on Camp Avenue, where my mother lived from age 14. Last week, it was flooded, but it still stood, withstanding the wind and waves just as it did when Hurricane Camille came through in 1969. Camp Avenue, its residents say, is the best street in Gulfport. Just ask Eo Gatewood, 89. He remembers my grandfather, James Oliver Bilbo, and the incredible clutter in and around his house - the musical instruments, the numerous Volkswagen Beetles.

A bag of jelly beans and a distinctive chocolate lollipop led to the arrest of two men and a juvenile late Monday in Westminster. They were accused of stealing the candy and other items from a vehicle parked in the Middle Brook development at the south end of town. The items were reported stolen about 10: 50 p.m. A witness told police that three youths entered the car, then left in a light-colored Chevrolet Cavalier. Some of the items were found along the road, including a purse and cosmetics.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Frank Ferguson, general manager at Montgomery Country Club in Laytonsville, highlighted his score of 66 with an eagle-3 to take the first-round lead in the Middle Atlantic PGA Section Players Championship at Farmington Country Club yesterday. Only four players beat par 70 for the 6,631 yards on a beautiful fall day, where slick greens sent many scores soaring in the select 65-player field. David Long, from the CC of Woodmore, shot 68 (three birdies, one bogey). A stroke back were Mark Evenson, a former winner of this event, and David Hutsell, a Towson resident from Columbia CC. Ferguson, a former head pro champion, had three front-nine birdies on putts inside of 8 feet and eagled the 563-yard 16th on a chip shot.

HAGERSTOWN -- As recently as last week, Dean Wilson's game did not appear to make him a threat for the 76th Open championship of the Maryland State Golf Association. That was before a fellow professional offered some help, and now Wilson, a Timonium resident, is one title and $5,400 richer from the $30,000 purse.Wilson, who was not having that profitable a relationship with his putter for most of the final round at Fountain Head Country Club, had it when it counted, jamming home a 15-foot putt on the second extra hole to win a playoff from Ricky Touma and amateur Bobby Bilbo.

I was shocked by your report of Sen. Barbara Mikulski's effusive praise for the late senator and one-time Klansman Robert Byrd. It demonstrated her detachment from a vast segment of Marylanders and her supreme confidence in easy re-election. Senator Mikulski represents Maryland, the native soil of Frederick Douglass and Thurgood Marshall; the home of America's most venerable and venerated African-American newspaper; the cradle of a civil rights movement that got its sea legs in Baltimore and changed our nation.

CHEVY CHASE - Rick Schuller, relegated to a playoff after missing a short birdie putt in the 20th annual Callaway Middle Atlantic PGA Head Pro championship, finally made up for it yesterday, but it took him six extra holes to break away from the superb putting of Steve Madsen at Chevy Chase Club. At the end of the 27 holes (par 70, 6,800 yards, plus a repeat of the front nine), Schuller, Madsen and Charlie Briggs were tied at 1-over-par 106 in the 79-man field. Briggs, from Burning Tree Club, went out with a bogey at the second extra hole.

The attorney for a man accused of murdering a baby argued yesterday that any of several people -- parents included -- could have killed the Crofton boy, but prosecutors said only Zenon Cantu Jr. really had an opportunity. After five days of testimony, both sides gave closing arguments before an Anne Arundel County Circuit courtroom packed with misty-eyed relatives and friends of Cantu and the baby, Nicholas R. Alford. As the two camps left the courtroom, lawyers and deputies herded them to opposite sides of the hall to avoid a repetition of a hallway confrontation that occurred early in the week.
