Aaron Parks always assumed he'd play college basketball somewhere on the East Coast. That notion, however, changed in a hurry for the Lake Clifton grad about one week ago. Parks, who has spent the past year at Notre Dame Prep (Mass.), got a call from an assistant coach at Cal State Northridge inviting him to take an official visit to the Big West school. So the 6-foot-3, 198-pound combo guard packed his bags for Southern California over the weekend and returned home to Baltimore as the Matadors' newest commitment.

PHILADELPHIA -- Believe it or not, just 4 1/2 weeks are left until NCAA Selection Sunday. By the time of the Selection Show on March 7, 30 teams will have been crowned conference basketball champions and gotten automatic bids. The show will be about the 34 at-large bids, seedings and matchups. At this point, there are not many more than 40 teams vying for those 34 spots. And 24 of them are probably locked up. So what we have is around 16 teams trying to get one of the last 10 spots.Conference by conference, here is my best guess at how it stands now, including the Rating Percentage Index and how many teams each conference is likely to get.America East (1)

Disturbed by a school principal she and other parents of students found rude and autocratic, Edna Manns decided to organize a community meeting. Trying to lead others was a leap for the unassuming woman. But she pulled it off. Problems diminished at Lockerman-Bundy Elementary School in West Baltimore after Manns brought school board members and dozens of parents together. Although the principal was removed eventually, Manns says that wasn't her plan. She simply wanted to improve life for her son and other neighborhood children.

COLLEGE PARK -- The coach isn't Rick Majerus, it's Larry Eustachy. The campus isn't in Salt Lake City, it's in Logan. One more thing. It isn't Utah, it's Utah State.A few at Maryland dropped the State part last night, when the Terps discussed their first-round opponent in the NCAA tournament Thursday in Sacramento, Calif. By today, the fourth seed in the West Region will know plenty about the No. 13.Utah State has an RPI of 54, which is definitely not cupcake territory. It has a member of the tournament's all-name team, junior forward Pharoah Davis.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- He ducked and weaved, spun and stutter stepped, threaded through defenders, scored 18 first-half points and drove himself nearly to exhaustion.Utah State guard Marcus Saxon demonstrated yesterday why some NBA teams consider him a potential first-round draft choice. But he wasn't nearly enough."I don't think at this level, the NCAA tournament, that one guy is going to beat you too often," said Maryland coach Gary Williams after his team slowed down Saxon and pulled away to an 82-68 victory in the West Regional.
