In 1988, Michael J. Travieso suffered a shock when his older brother, Jack, was found dead of a heart attack at the age of 58 in his office at NBC in Washington.The death of his brother, who was a field producer at NBC News, did more than bring grief into Mr. Travieso's life; it changed it."I began to think about what I was going to be doing when I was 58 or 50," he said. "Did I want to spend the rest of my life in the kind of pressure situation that I was in? Or did I want to make some other contribution?"

Officials of the University of Maryland will soon implement a controversial plan to establish closer ties between the Maryland Shock Trauma Center and University Hospital despite the apparent absence of a formal vote by the state board of regents, a top official said yesterday.The plan, which trauma doctors say chips away at the independence they have enjoyed for years, was discussed by the regents in a secret session that preceded their regular open meeting. The issue did not appear on the regents' agenda.

Six months ago, Martin O'Malley was just another city councilman -- absent from almost every list of possible mayoral contenders. Now, as the Democratic nominee in this largely Democratic city and state, everyone wants his ear.More than 200 people attended a $1,000-a-plate breakfast for the mayoral hopeful Wednesday. He's had to hire an assistant to travel with him almost everywhere he goes to record meetings and telephone numbers and take business cards. And he's handed over the pager he once kept at his side to another campaign staff member, who fields calls.

Barbara Cecelia Santiago, a Bel Air office manager, died of a stroke Monday at University of Maryland Medical Center. The Churchville resident was 67. Born Barbara Cecelia DePalma in Bethpage on Long Island, N.Y., and raised in Albany, she married Paul John Santiago Sr. in 1959. They moved to Maryland in 1965, when he became a professor of chemistry at Harford Community College. In 1980, she earned her associate's degree there. Mrs. Santiago had worked for the past decade at the Northeastern Office of the Legal Aid Bureau in Bel Air. "She was the heart of the office," said Dorcey Berndt, its chief attorney.
