On January 29, 2005, CLAUDE ASHFORD BELTON, of Baltimore; devoted son of the late Callie Wolfe (nee Billips); beloved father of Karon Meighan, Annette and Daniel Schumaker Sr., and Marianne and Keith Short; cherished grandfather of eight, and the late Ashley Schumaker, and great-grandfather of one; dear brother of Jacqueline Calarco; also survived by many nieces and nephews. Mr. Belton was a retired Baltimore City firefighter, and he enjoyed reading, fishing and spending time with his family.

Vandals broke into a portable classroom at Gardenville Elementary School before the start of the school day yesterday, leaving a mess of ruined schoolbooks and furniture and urine on the floor. Fourth-grade teacher Valerie Belton said she was devastated to discover the havoc in her classroom, which she had renovated over the summer with furniture donated by IKEA in White Marsh. "I just stood in the middle of the floor and started crying," said Belton, who had relished surprising her pupils with the new bookshelves, carpets and colorful bear-shaped armchairs.

Mark Belton, a county commissioner for Queen Anne's County, has been named executive director of Pride of Baltimore Inc., the organization that oversees the operation of the clipper ship Pride of Baltimore II.Belton, a resident of Stevensville, has been a county commissioner for two years. He was director of external operations for the Naval Academy Athletic Association from 1991 to 1996.Belton graduated from the Naval Academy in 1983, then was on active duty as a naval officer until 1990, serving on a number of vessels.
