I stood in my grandmother's room that April 1968 night. Its window looked directly east and southeast. It was two days after the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination and Baltimore's riot spread out before our eyes. She and some of my brothers and sisters watched in horror as the distant buildings burned. My grandmother could identify the landmarks and called out when the old Stieff piano factory near Aiken Street erupted in violently shooting flames.

Late January might be high muskrat season, but don't ask me to touch one. In truth, I don't even like their skinned bodies when displayed on a bed of ice at the Lexington Market. I encountered this critter, which normally thrives in the Chesapeake's marshes, often on Saturdays in my childhood, when my mother rounded up her children and led us across 29th Street to Greenmount Avenue to board a No. 8 streetcar.

On November 17, 2007, DOROTHY C. ( nee Winterstein) ; beloved wife of the late Robert D. Kahler; devoted mother of Robert G. and Harlan J. Kahler.
