I normally agree with columnist Dan Rodricks ' assertions and conclusions, but I was disappointed with his comments regarding Attorney General Doug Gansler's gubernatorial campaign ( "10 weeks out, 2 questions for Maryland Democrats," April 12). Mr. Rodricks chose to focus on the beach-house party in Delaware last summer that Mr. Gansler briefly visited. However, either he doesn't know the facts about that incident or he simply considers them irrelevant. The Instagram photo does show Mr. Gansler amid a group of partying teenagers, including his son. The photo also shows adult chaperons keeping an eye on the revelers - but Mr. Rodricks doesn't bother to point that out. He also neglects to note that the party house was rented for graduation week festivities by five sets of student parents who slept in the house all week - with at least two of them chaperoning at all times.

The thermometer read 60 degrees, but things were smoldering on Beverly-Triton Beach -- at least for the horseshoe crabs. In their world, this bit of the Mayo Peninsula in Anne Arundel County was the hottest spot in the Chesapeake Bay. And with a full moon and high tide, yesterday's predawn hours should have seen the annual peak for horseshoe procreation. But only 73 of the prehistoric creatures were found at the water's edge at 5:30 a.m. Biologists from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources counted 597 horse shoe crabs last year.

If I were new to Maryland, I might think that state Attorney General Douglas Gansler was either a child rapist, a murderer, a crack cocaine dealer or perhaps all of the above ( "Gansler says he made 'a mistake,'" Oct. 24). Mr. Gansler is being vilified as a terrible, irresponsible political aspirant because there was obvious imbibing of alcoholic beverages by minors. But did anyone ever stop to think that if had he had disrupted that beach party in Bethany those drunken kids might have turned on him?

Doug Gansler's truly bad day of TV optics started Thursday with a Sun story and accompanying picture off Instagram of a beach party the attorney general attended in Delaware. By 9 a.m., the cable channels were running with the picture and the story -- and it went that way on the hour throughout the day straight through the network evening newscasts and prime-time cable. And then, the story was picked up by late-night comedians. Here's what Jay Leno had to say on the "Tonight" show.

The Annapolis Maritime Museum and the U.S. Lighthouse Society's Chesapeake Chapter will hold their first joint fund-raiser tomorrow, a "beach party" to benefit the Thomas Point Lighthouse Project. The event, to be held at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Phillip Merrill Environment Center in Bay Ridge, was organized to raise public awareness of what Jeff Holland, executive director of the Annapolis Maritime Museum, called a "revolutionary" partnership among the museum, the U.S. Lighthouse Society, the city of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County.

SAN DIEGO -- If Republicans ran their presidential campaign the way they throw parties, Bob Dole would be 10 points ahead in the polls by now.In town for its national convention this week, the GOP is going all out to entertain its nearly 4,000 delegates and alternates and get them psyched for an uphill campaign this fall.On Saturday night, people ate snow crab legs and oysters at a $500-a-plate fund-raiser at Planet Hollywood while a band played "I Got You, Babe," in honor of California congressman Sonny Bono.

SunSpot.net kicks off its summer guide to bay and beach vacationing tonight with a benefit triple-feature of (mostly) "beach blanket" movies at Bengies Drive-In. The movie tri-fecta, co-sponsored by radio station Mix 106.5, begins at 8:15 p.m. with "Beach Party," the campy 1963 film that introduced Hollywood's version of beach life to the world, with Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon starring as two swinging teens totally into the beach scene. At 10 p.m., John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John star in "Grease," a musical that posits life during the '50s as one giant car hop (and probably mentions the beach)

Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler's running mate said Friday she believed "it's obvious on its face" that an opponent in the Democratic race for governor is "trying to throw dirt every time we're making progress. " Del. Jolene Ivey, talking on the Washington-area Kojo Nnamdi radio show, responded to questions about The Baltimore Sun's article this week about Gansler's presence at a June beach party for recent high school graduates. Teens said there was underage drinking, and Gansler acknowledged he did nothing to stop the party.

It's the visual imagery that usually dictates how a story plays on TV - as well as how viewers perceive it. And the image driving a story about Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler being at a beach party where underage drinking took place is not the kind of visual with which any public official wants to be associated - especially one in law enforcement. All the news conferences, like the one Gansler held Thursday, and all the words of spin the Democratic candidate for governor might muster won't change the storytelling power of a beach-party moment captured on Instagram.

And Adam Scott needed directions for his first-ever visit. The reason they all flocked to the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am was not to try out their "A" material for celebs Bill Murray, Ray Romano or George Lopez . They came for a preview of the U.S. Open. Pebble has hosted both events in the same year four times, with Jack Nicklaus (1972)

Think of it as "The Three Faces of Gidget" -- in drag.In one of the most glacial winters in Baltimore history, director Terry J. Long has transformed the tiny Spotlighters Theatre into a slice of sun-drenched Malibu Beach, circa 1960 -- the setting for Charles Busch's corny, campy, comic "Psycho Beach Party."In Sixties lingo, it's a groovy way to come in out of the cold -- unless, of course, drag comedies about psycho teen-agers aren't your bag, in which case, you are forewarned and should stay home.
