North Harford running back Brandon Bayer turned Thursday night's game into a nightmare for the Joppatowne defense. Bayer ran for 155 yards and scored three touchdowns — and that was just in the first half. Bayer finished with 188 yards to help the No. 11 Hawks roll to a 35-16 victory over the visiting Mariners in an Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference game. That performance followed Bayer's 127-yard effort last week at Fallston. Bayer ran for a touchdown with 47 seconds left and the subsequent two-point conversion that gave the Hawks a come-from-behind 36-35 victory.

About a month ago, my son-in-law started taking one regular Bayer aspirin each morning and one Bayer PM before going to sleep. Two weeks into this regimen, he started bleeding from the mouth while he was sleeping. He stopped taking the aspirin, and the bleeding stopped as well. Is this a possible side effect? Aspirin can thin the blood by interfering with the sticky part of blood called platelets. Some people are especially susceptible to this effect, so even a standard dose might trigger bleeding.

Consider the lowly aspirin. It requires no prescription, comes in myriad generic forms and is rarely featured in glamorous advertising campaigns. Turns out, after more than a century of study, that advice was pretty good. The old-fashioned painkiller helps prevent heart attacks, especially in men, and strokes, particularly in women, and poses a lower risk of side effects than any of its flashier rivals.
