Baumgardner talked at the end of the state indoor meet about how his team was going to push really hard to win the state title in the spring. The Mavericks were frustrated because Pikesville had rallied to beat them by four points to capture the Class 1A indoor title. The coach was right, as the Mavericks ran well throughout a tough spring and won the Class 1A state title despite losing their top runner, Katie Leisher, to dehydration midway through the championship meet. The team turned in a strong performance to win its first outdoor track state title with 102.5 points.

Dr. George M. Baumgardner, a country doctor who even pulled teeth occasionally, died Saturday of respiratory failure at Carroll County General Hospital. He was 92.He retired in 1976 after a 44-year career as a general practitioner in Rosedale and moved to Charlestown, W.Va. Since 1986, he had been a resident of the Carroll Lutheran Village retirement community in Westminster."He was a jack-of-all-trades," said his son, John M. Baumgardner, of Finksburg."His office was in our home at Philadelphia and Golden Ring roads, and the most distinguishing thing about him was that he did everything," the son said.

Donna Jean Dean, of Joppa, has announced the engagement of her daughter, Jacklyn Rose Hendrix, to James F. Baumgardner of Lancaster, Pa., son of Larry and Doris Baumgardner and father of Sophie Baumgardner. The bride-to-be is a graduate of Harford Technical High School and Harford Community College and is working on her bachelor's degree. The prospective groom served in the U.S. Marine Corps and worked in security. He is attending Barber School. A September wedding is planned.

Baumgardner calls himself "a chronic complainer," explaining why he sought the seat he recently won on the Taneytown City Council.Mr. Baumgardner, 49, replaces Thomas DeNike, who recently moved to Virginia.A native of Taneytown, Mr. Baumgardner said he never tried to obtain a political office before 1983 because of his previous employment as a radio news announcer and television announcer in Baltimore. In broadcasting, he said he always had to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest.

It was a bittersweet victory for Raymond and Brenda Shipley. The Westminster couple had just been granted permanent custody of their 13-month-old grandson, Carter Ray Baumgardner. But the Shipleys, whose son was shot to death in a plot by his then-pregnant wife, still have one more hurdle: They want the court to bar the child from visiting his mother in prison. Melissa Baumgardner Shipley is serving a life sentence without parole at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women in Jessup.

A Carroll County woman sent to prison this year for masterminding the killing of her husband will not be allowed visits with her two young sons from a previous marriage, a judge ruled yesterday. Following the recommendations of a court-appointed attorney for the two older children of Melissa Lynn Baumgardner Shipley, Carroll Circuit Judge Michael M. Galloway barred them from visiting her in prison. However, she will be allowed to have monitored telephone calls with them twice a month and can write them letters.
