On September 20, 2004, DOROTHY BATTAGLIA (nee Haase) passed away of natural causes. She was 84 years old. Born in Chicago, IL, Dorothy spent her later years in Baltimore, MD. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-two years, Joseph Battaglia. A woman of indomitable spirit, well loved by her family and friends, Dorothy enjoyed artistic hobbies in painting and crafts, dancing, classic movies, and social activities with her friends. Dorothy will be remembered with love by her sister Pat Buckley, son Robert Paul Battaglia, daughter Bonnie Snow, their spouses and grandchildren Michael, Christine, Ian and Kendall as well as many dear nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

The Marriage of Miss Maria Patricia Battaglia of Sparks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Battaglia, Sr. of Sparks to Mr. Robert William Bieneman of Baltimore, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark G. Bieneman of Baltimore took place on New Year's Eve, December 31, 2006 at The Church of the Annunciation. The Reverend William P. Foley and the Reverend Monsignor Roy M. Klister officiated. The bride was escorted by her father. Victoria Battaglia, sister of the bride, was the maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Rebecca Law, Regina Bieneman, sisters of the groom, Patricia Wehner, Jill Leitch, Kiersten Palmer, Sarah Bayne, Kristi Kincaid and Meredith Hauf.

A dispute that began in May involving the demotion of a popular former assistant principal at C. Milton Wright High School remains unresolved. Christopher Battaglia, the former assistant principal at the high school who is appealing his demotion from assistant principal to teacher, met with the superintendent and the school district's lawyers Friday. After a seven-hour meeting, he told a group of supporters rallying outside, "It's not over." Battaglia's hearing was recessed and scheduled to continue at a date that has not been set, said Harford County Public Schools spokesman Don Morrison.

ILVA TINGLE BATTAGLIA HUGHES, 88, of Reedville, VA, and formerly of Baltimore, Md., died Tuesday, June 27, 2006. She was the daughter of the late Thomas E. and Martha C. French Tingle and the widow of Dr. Dominic T. Battaglia, M.D. and Mr. George H. Hughes. She was a retired registered nurse. She was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Battaglia and is survived by her daughter Sue Madej of Mila, two sons, Tom Battaglia and John Battaglia of Sunny Bank; 15 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.

Tony Battaglia has been racing since he was 16. Now, three years later, the Union Bridge resident plans to move up to Class II competition and race for the track championship at 75-80 Dragway.Until the latter part of last year, Battaglia raced in the Trophy Class or the ETK class. It is a division where drivers race for trophies instead of money, and can race the car they drive on the street and gain experience while having some fun.Battaglia has enjoyed the learning process and feels he is ready to move up to Class II. Actually, he is anxious for the season to start in March.

Lynne Anne Battaglia, who is likely to become Maryland's next U.S. attorney, first envisioned a career in public service when she was a schoolgirl in a small town on Lake Erie.An attraction that began with student government in high school was cemented when she went to college in Washington.Ms. Battaglia, now 47, was a freshman at American University when John F. Kennedy was assassinated. That episode, she said, affected her deeply.She was among the crowd outside the church during the president's funeral procession.

A seemingly routine decision by the Harford County school superintendent to transfer a popular assistant principal has rankled parents and students at a Bel Air high school, sparking a petition drive and vows to fight the move. Nearly 100 parents and students packed a county school board meeting Monday asking that Assistant Principal Christopher M. Battaglia be allowed to remain at C. Milton Wright High School. However, Superintendent Jacqueline Haas finalized Battaglia's transfer to Edgewood High for the 2007-2008 school year.

Tomorrow's Derby programming begins at 4:30 p.m. (WBAL/Channel 11 and WRC/Channel 4) with the Kentucky Derby Red Carpet Special. Yes, that's red carpet as in the celebrity- and fashion-filled coverage you've come to know and love from any number of entertainment awards shows. NBC has imported Access Hollywood's Shaun Robinson to patrol the carpet. Just a hint for her: Horses are notoriously bad interviews. And now we have Tiago's mother, Set Them Free, who's here to see her son run in the Derby.
