San Jose, California---YOU ARE ACCUSED of a shameful crime. Your accuser is unnamed. The time, place and circumstances of your crime are unspecified. No evidence is presented. You are condemned. This isn't Kafka. At Brown University, a very liberal liberal-arts school in Rhode Island, a ''rape list'' scrawled on the wall of a library women's room names ''men who have sexually assaulted me or a woman I know.''The list, started in October, names 30 men. As soon as janitors scrub the wall clean, someone writes the ''rape list'' on it again.

This is a story about a sportswriter, and Steven Spielberg, and pee wee football, and how losing your job can be the best thing that ever happens to you. It's all true, although you may not believe it.Jim and I were a couple of wise guys covering high school sports for different newspapers in the early '80s. I was working for the late, lamented Dallas Times Herald. He was working for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, in Lubbock, Texas. We met at a state track meet and sat around the press box compiling a list of football coach cliches.

Around the house* Spray kitchen curtains with a fabric protector. Curtains that hang directly over a sink are particularly vulnerable to splashes and spills.* Hang small wicker baskets on bathroom wall for extra storage. Each family member's basket can hold razors, toothpaste, toothbrush and other items.* Minimize static cling. Rub a fabric-softener sheet over a slip or the inside of a dress.* Remove coffee stains from the inside of a thermos. Place crushed ice, a small amount of water and several teaspoons of salt inside thermos, shake vigorously, then rinse.

NGUYEN NGOC Loan died on Tuesday. In many ways his life was unremarkable. He was a Vietnamese refugee, failed restaurateur, husband and father. But one instant, captured on film 30 years ago, catapulted him into the spotlight and made him a symbol of the brutality and moral bankruptcy of the Vietnam War.At the height of the Tet offensive, Mr. Loan executed a Viet Cong prisoner by firing point-blank into the bound man's brain. As he explained in later years, the prisoner was not a nameless civilian, as had been stated in the press, but the commander of a Viet Cong guerrilla unit.

TURIN, Italy-- --The world's largest bathroom wall knows no limits. What I saw was pure filth. It felt like someone activated the emergency sprinkler system in the middle of a party. Shani Davis, a speed skater from Chicago, won Olympic gold yesterday. Even bigger, he became the first black athlete to win an individual gold medal at the Winter Games - ever. As sad as that sounds, you have to start somewhere, so I walked away from the arena thinking about past athletic pioneers and wondering if any young black children were about to ask their parents for speed skating lessons as they were being tucked into bed. And then I saw the bathroom wall.

After an emotionally wrought court hearing that lasted almost all day, the wife of former Baltimore Raven Michael C. McCrary withdrew her petition Monday for permanent protection from her husband, who she had alleged was violent, threatening and abusive. In hurried negotiations during a break in the proceedings in Baltimore County Circuit Court, lawyers for Mary Haley McCrary and the ex-defensive end agreed that the case would be dismissed as long as their clients vowed to have no contact with each other except to deal with logistical matters concerning the care of their 6-year-old daughter.
