Justin Black made big baskets at the end of regulation and overtime, helping fifth-seeded Morgan State beat fourth-seeded Savannah State, 64-61, in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament Thursday night at Norfolk (Va.) Scope Arena. Black scored 20 points for the Bears (16-14), who will play eighth-seeded Bethune-Cookman in today's semifinals. Bethune-Cookman ousted top-seeded Norfolk State, the MEAC's regular-season champion, 70-68 in overtime Wednesday.

When he's not on the basketball court, Edmondson senior guard Darius Walker is more laid back than loud. But there was one exception recently when he simply couldn't help himself. It came last Thursday at Randallstown, when he helped lead the No. 5 Red Storm past the host Rams, 73-63, to capture the Class 2A North regional championship. After falling in the regional title game in the past four years, the Red Storm had just advanced to the state semifinals at Comcast Center and it was something to yell about.

Archbishop Spalding's girls basketball season will last another three weeks because the No. 1 Cavaliers are headed to the National High School Invitational on April 4-6 at Georgetown Prep in Bethesda. The Cavaliers (29-2), who won the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship last month, join three other teams in the field: Dr. Phillips, from Orlando; Life Center Academy from Burlington, N.J.; and Dillard from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. “We're very excited,” Spalding coach Bookie Rosemond said.

The junior forward led the No. 4 Millers (24-2) to the Class 3A North regional championship last week, playing a pivotal role in the team's 64-50 semifinal win over Patterson on Tuesday before Friday's 70-65 victory against City in the title game. Costley scored 25 points against Patterson, including 13-for-13 from the free-throw line, and he also had seven rebounds. In Friday's win against City, he stepped up when it was needed most to pull away in the closing minute. With the game tied at 65, his layup with 37 seconds left gave the Millers the lead for good, and he added another basket in the closing seconds on a goaltending call.
