On October 14, 2004, BERNARD H. SR., beloved husband of Agnes E. (nee Fitz Patrick), devoted father of Bernard Jr. and Richard Basel, father-in-law of Deborah E. Basel. Also survived by one step-granddaughter Elspeth Greene and devoted brother of Dennis Basel and Pat Chlumsky. Also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Lassahn Funeral Home, Inc., 7401 Belair Road, on Monday at 11 A.M. Interment Lakeview Memorial Gardens. Visiting Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Baltimore Public Library/Parkville or to the Baltimore Symphony Associates or to HERO.

Betty Jane Basel, a former Fells Point tavern owner, died Friday of a heart attack at her home in the historic neighborhood. She was 67. For about 15 years, until retiring in 1995, she owned Frances' Pub in the 2000 block of Fleet St., a bar founded by her mother. She sponsored Frances' Mug Club, a social organization whose members collected food for Thanksgiving and Christmas distribution to the needy. Born Betty Jane Rhude in Baltimore, she was raised on Scott Street and attended public schools.

Birth of Zionism's drive to forge Israel to be markedBASEL, Switzerland -- About 1,700 delegates have arrived in Basel to mark the 100th anniversary of the historic meeting that launched Zionism's drive to create modern Israel.The First Zionist Congress in August 1897 is credited with transforming scattered 19th-century calls for a Jewish homeland into a single political movement that helped change the face of the 20th century.Pub Date: 8/27/97

On August 14, 2004, MARTHA (nee Basel) GHEORGHIU, dear wife of the late Paul Gheorghiu, beloved mother of Dr. Frances Gheorghiu, grandmother of Eve, Vincent and Mary Pogoda. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, 8/19 at Highview Memorial Garden at 2 P.M. A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date.

Breakfast: muesli and luscious berry yogurt from little brown glass jars overlooking the Rhine River in Basel, Switzerland.Lunch: choucroute royale, hearty enough to fuel a vineyard worker for a day of pruning in this famous Alsatian wine region in Colmar, France.Dinner: pumpkin soup and sauteed pork with peach slices in a 450-year-old farmhouse in Germany's Black Forest.Three meals, three countries, a single day. With several stops for sightseeing, it took us 12 hours, but the pace was reasonable and allowed us to sample the cultural differences between the three countries.

Mary Catherine Wells, a part-time tailor at Boscov's Department Store in Salisbury, died Sunday at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center there of heart and lung disease. She was 71.A resident of Snow Hill for 13 years, she was a canvasser for the 1990 Census. Earlier, she was a tailor at Macy's in Hunt Valley.She was born Mary Catherine Basel in Baltimore. She was a former president of the American Legion Auxiliary in Pocomoke City.Her husband, Robert Wells, a retired parts division clerk for General Motors Corp.
