The Chapelgate Christian Academy baseball team scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat St. John's-Catholic Prep, 7-4, on Thursday in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association C Conference playoffs at Calvert Hall. The two teams will meet in a winner-take-all game 5 p.m. Monday at McDonogh. Wednesday' softball No. 13 C. Milton Wright 10, Patapsco 0: Winning pitcher Kyralee Comeaux threw a one-hit shutout for the host Mustangs (19-3) in a Class 3A North regional semifinal.

Fourth-ranked South River gave up two early runs, but came back to score five and defeat No. 5 North County, 5-2, on Friday to win the Class 4A East region baseball title. It is the first region title for South River since 2008. Brody Raimondo went 4-for-4 with a double, while Scott Mitchell went 2-for-4 with a triple to lead South River (18-5). Mitchell also pitched a complete game five-hitter with seven strikeouts. The Seahawks will face Prince George's County's Eleanor Roosevelt, the South Region winner, at 4 p.m.on Tuesday in College Park.

Women's basketball Terps ' DeVaughn to take part in WUG trials this week Maryland junior center Alicia DeVaughn will head to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., this week to take part in USA Basketball Women's World University Games Team trials. DeVaughn is one of 33 of the nation's top college athletes attending the trials today to Sunday. The World University Games women's basketball competition will be held July 8-15 in Kazan, Russia. Organized by the International University Sports Federation and held every other year, the WUG event is a multi-sport competition open to men and women between the ages of 17 and 24. DeVaughn averaged 8.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game to help Maryland to a 26-8 record and an appearance in the Sweet Sixteen.

In the top of the seventh inning at No. 6 Oakland Mills on Wednesday afternoon, Marriotts Ridge took a 3-2 lead on an RBI ground ball by leadoff man Jake Bender that sent home Matt Marinelli who had led off the inning with a single. At the time, Connor Delaney - the Mustangs' No. 5 hitter - thought the run would be enough for ace Eric Brown and the solid Marriotts Ridge defense. "I definitely trusted our defense ... but I knew any more runs we would get would be insurance runs," Delaney said.

When right-hander Zach Clark was summoned to Orioles manager Buck Showalter's office two weeks ago and told he was being designated for assignment, the conversation suddenly veered off in a peculiar direction. Clark, who at that moment was still digesting the end of his brief four-day stint in the majors after parts of eight years in the minor, said Showalter abruptly began talking about reigning National League Cy Young Award winner and current Toronto Blue Jays pitcher R.A. Visiting Gilman pounded out nine hits Wednesday night at Calvert Hall, but it was the Greyhounds' pitching that carried them in the second round of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference playoffs. Joe Smeton pitched 5 2/3 innings of four-hit ball to lead visiting and second-ranked Gilman to a 3-2 win over the No. 1 Cardinals. The victory advances the Greyhounds to Sunday's conference final at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen. Calvert Hall will host Archbishop Curley today in the double-elimination tournament.

Soccer Wake's Harris, Gamble among new Bohemians Two players from Wake Forest, goalkeeper Andrew Harris (Gilman) and forward Michael Gamble (McDonogh), have joined the Baltimore Bohemians of the United Soccer Leagues' Premier Development League. Other new players include midfielders Julio Arjona (George Mason), Malcolm Harris (McDonogh, Denver), Austin Martz (Georgetown), Sam Tana (St. Paul's, Susquehanna) and Geaton Caltabiano (Mount St. Joseph, UMBC)

What a wonderful, warm story you published about Michael Rose nband ("Former Wall Street success finds new path reviving Carver baseball," May 11) He is a hero to all, giving up a successful job at age 40 to give back to these desiring young people. Now we should hope that our sports figures and big business owners will give back to Mr. Rosenband and his cause! We need more people like him to give our young citizens a chance in this world. When he breaks out of the batter's box on a liner into the gap and hits first base in full stride on his way to another double, Machado shows old-school hustle.
