On January 16, 2007, BARBARA LEE SWANN (nee Kohler), Town Manager of Crofton, MD; beloved wife of the late Thomas J. Swann, preceded her in death 1989; devoted mother of Debbie Stuby, Sandy Ptomey, Brian and John Ptomey; grandmother of three. Memorial Service will be held Friday, January 19, 12 noon at the Community United Methodist Church of Crofton, 1690 Riedel Road, Crofton, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake and/or the SPCA of Anne Arundel County, Annapolis, MD.

AS MIGHT BE moderately obvious from the fact that I've been writing this column for several years, I have delusions of authorhood -- I'd love to write the great Maryland novel. (I suspect that James Michener beat me to it.)Like other aspiring authors, I hope to pick up pointers about the process from new Howard County resident Barbara Lee. Her first novel, "Death in Still Waters," takes place in the Chesapeake area.At 7 p.m. Wednesday, the Savage Library is sponsoring a lecture and discussion by Ms. Lee on how she became a published author.

As longtime activist Betsy Rose strummed her guitar, a handful of anti-war demonstrators sang, I'm gonna side with Barbara Lee/ down by the riverside/ down by the riverside./ I'm gonna side with Barbara Lee. ... Lee, a Democratic congresswoman whose East Bay District includes Berkeley, was the only member of the House or Senate who voted against a measure authorizing President Bush's war on terrorism.
