As the Ravens get ready to take on the 49ers in New Orleans, officials back home are preparing to deal with what they hope will be a joyful - but not too rowdy - Super Bowl night. Baltimore police have extensive plans, including mounted patrols, helicopter and camera surveillance downtown, as well as in Fells Point, Federal Hill and Canton, spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. Police hope to keep people safe while they have a good time. "Come to the city, celebrate the victory," he said, but to avoid traffic, "come early.

A 25-year-old man wanted by police for more than a week in the shooting of two other men at a bar near Fort Meade has been arrested, Anne Arundel County Police said Friday. Raynard Leo Boston, of no fixed address, was arrested without incident on Wednesday - after being called potentially armed and dangerous by police - after county investigators located him in the area of Cross and 6th streets in Brooklyn Park, which is on the city line, police said. Police first announced they were searching for Boston on Jan. 22, three days after he allegedly got into an early morning argument with a bouncer at My Place Bar and Lounge in the 1600 block of Annapolis Road in Odenton and opened fire, striking the 45-year-old bouncer in the lower body and a 34-year-old male bar patron in the hand, police said.

During this year's AFC championship game, patrons of Fells Point staple John Steven Ltd. were mesmerized by more than Joe Flacco's command of the offense. "Customers couldn't stop talking about the smell from the shrimp and the Old Bay," manager Cortland Leggio said. "The smell in there is very unique. " A longtime spot for fresh seafood, John Steven Ltd. keeps its bartenders busy by not only serving drinks, but also steaming mussels, clams and shrimp behind the wooden bar. It's an old-school Baltimore touch not often seen anymore.

With country music blaring, honky-tonk decor, and a menu stacked with smokehouse favorites, Cowboys & Rednecks (also known as CNR) is hardly shy about its theme. We half expected the hostess to greet us with a "Yeehaw!" CNR's owner, Federal Hill resident and big-time country music fan Guy Naylor, opened the bar in late 2011, imagining that it would be a fun addition to his neighborhood. Local bar-hoppers agreed; CNR is often packed to overflowing on weekend nights. CNR's success as a bar is uncontested, but its status as a go-to restaurant is less confirmed.

Old is new, new was old two weeks ago. For what it's worth, this is nothing ... new. Whether it be the churning tides of fashion, music - or in our case, alcohol - the contributions of shows (well, really just one show) like "Mad Men" have renewed an interest in the classics. Without exception, especially classic cocktails. The Harvey Wallbanger, the Old Fashioned, Box Car, Rob Roy and the granddaddy of them all: The Manhattan. The Manhattan is the very definition of "classic cocktail.

UPDATE (Jan. 18): Not so fast. Although the Baltimore Business Journal reported soon-to-be new owner (paperwork still needs to be completed to make it official, he said) Steve O'Donnell would "likely 'keep everything the same'" at J. Patrick's, O'Donnell says that's not the case. During a phone conversation this morning, he said he will likely leave it as an Irish bar, but that "it can't stay open and operate how it is right now. " "Is it going to stay J. Patrick's?
