On Sunday night, Looney's Pub was surprisingly low-key. You kind of always expect a Looney's, which has had a flagship home in O'Donnell Square for over a decade, to be packed with young, screaming sports fans, beer mugs flying across the room, the music turned up so loud you can barely make out the lyrics. But I was at the new Looney's in College Park, the latest bar in the company's growing stable, which now includes locations in Bel Air and Maple Lawn. The crowd at the bar, which opened in October, wasn't swaying woozily, but intently watching the Giants put up what seemed like a losing fight against the Cowboys.

When it comes to Federal Hill Ravens bars, there's Mother's and there's everybody else. Whether the game is home or away, Mother's is one of the biggest and best places to watch it. A few years ago, Mother's added a huge expansion called Mother's on the Alley, and the outdoor Purple Patio is perennially packed before, during and after home games. For 1 p.m. home games, people start showing up around 8 a.m. for brunch and Bloody Marys. Some stay until the game's over. The patio starts getting busy around 10 a.m. Drinks: Outside, 16-ounce Miller Lites are $4.50, 24-ounce Miller Lites are $6.50 and 24-ounce Yuenglings are $7.50.

In the latest of a string of Baltimore-area killings involving servicemen, a Marine about to be redeployed to Afghanistan was shot at a downtown bar early Friday. Chase Love, a 26-year-old from New Orleans, was shot once in the chest after an altercation in the hookah lounge between 3:15 a.m. and 3:30 a.m., said police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. He said Love was celebrating with fellow Marines before returning to Afghanistan. Guglielmi said police are interviewing bouncers and other witnesses but have identified no suspects or persons of interest in the shooting.

On Dundalk's Railway Avenue, everyone knew Lee Martin. As the owner of Hop's Inn, he would stand you a drink if you were short of cash. Sometimes, if things were bad, he'd lend you a few bucks. On New Year's Eve every year, his patrons recall, drinks were on the house. That's why no one in the neighborhood seems to understand why anyone would want to kill him. Martin, 43, was fatally shot early Saturday by two assailants just after he had closed for the night and was walking the few steps to his house next door.

A celebration for freshmen members of the Maryland state legislature ended abruptly late Thursday when smoke entered the Annapolis barroom in which it was held. Gov. Martin O'Malley and House Speaker Michael E. Busch were among at least 50 lawmakers who left the smoky building at about 11:15 p.m., just before Annapolis fire units arrived. Lt. John J. Bowes of the Annapolis Fire Marshal's Office said there was "no fire" at the bar, but said smoke and debris came out of the ventilation system when the heating system -- which had been off for some time -- was inadvertently turned on. The smoky conditions occurred toward the end of a celebration for roughly 40 lawmakers who had just finished their first terms in office, a bi-partisan affair designed to build camaraderie.

The Baltimore liquor board suspended the license this week of a Brooklyn bar — the site of a fatal beating over a pool game in May — for nine months. The license holders for Ravens House in the 3700 block of S. Hanover St. were found guilty Thursday of several violations during the hearing, including running an establishment that is a threat to peace and safety of the community. A neighborhood organization petitioned the board to have the bar's license revoked after the attack, sparking the hearing.
