LOS ANGELES -- Ryan Tedder, the front man and founding member of the alt-rock band OneRepublic, is first and foremost a writer. He's penned tunes for such pop starlets as Natasha Bedingfield and Hilary Duff, co-wrote with Jesse McCartney a U.K. chart-topping hit ("Bleeding Love") for Leona Lewis, and collaborated with rappers Lil Jon and Bubba Sparxxx. OneRepublic's high-profile cameo on Timbaland's album Shock Value, a remix of the band's string-soaked lament "Apologize," which has been holding strong on the charts, is a testament to the versatility of Tedder's compositional skills.

Thousands of mourners turned out at Waters African Methodist Episcopal Church at 417 Aisquith St. on a warm summer's day in 1939, to say farewell to Chick Webb, the famous jazz-era band leader and East Baltimore native who had died earlier that month.Born and raised near Madison Street and Ashland Avenue, Webb sold newspapers as a boy and taught himself to play the drums in his spare time.Despite physical deformity, which resulted from a childhood fall down a flight of steps and left him in constant pain throughout his life, Webb went on to become a popular band leader and drummer whose popularity was rivaled only by that of Gene Krupa.

Recently reunited band Planes Mistaken for Stars played Red Palace in Washignton on Saturday night. Intern Jake Fewster had this report: For some, the idea of a reunion show conjures up images of a geriatric, arena rock band way past their prime. This was not at all the case on Saturday night when Planes Mistaken For Stars took the stage at the Red Palace in Washington D.C. Far from geriatric and even further from arena rock, Planes performed a masterful set that left my ears ringing, in the best way possible, late into Sunday night.

Hope everyone had a peaceful, perhaps hangover-nursing Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. We were off, too, so that explains the "Week in Nightlife" post coming today. Anyway, on with the shows: On Tuesday, the Guess Who's lead singer Burton Cummings performs a sold-out solo show at Rams Head on Stage in Annapolis. If you're really in need of live music, head south for Bike Trip at D.C.'s Black Cat . On Wednesday, Southern sludge-metal married couple Jucifer plays Sonar's Talking Head Lounge.

When Beach House, the Baltimore dream-pop duo of Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally, released 2010's "Teen Dream," the band was immediately thrust into the forefront of the indie-music world. Pitchfork named it the fifth best album of the year; Rolling Stone placed it at No. 17. Indie-rock chart-toppers Vampire Weekend invited the band on an impressive North American tour that included stops at New York City's Radio City Music Hall and Merriweather Post Pavilion . Following the steps of Animal Collective, the duo seemed positioned to become the new "it" band in taste-making circles.
