Baltimore's Casa Mia under-17 boys club, the defending national champion, is one of four Maryland teams that will compete next week in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., in the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships. The 48-team tournament for boys and girls teams from under-14 through under-19 age groups, will start Tuesday and run through July 25 at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. Joining Casa Mia from the state by winning their Region I age-group tournaments are the Baltimore Bays U-19 boys; last year's national runner-up, Bethesda Excel, U-17 girls; and Bethesda United, U-15 boys.

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Baltimore Bays had a less-than-memorable first encounter with the Charleston Battery last night, dropping a 2-0 decision in a United States Interregional Soccer League game.Midfielder Kerry Briston gave Charleston a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game, scoring from 18 yards out when his shot deflected off the right post. At the 35-minute mark, forward Mario Lone scored on a cross pass from eight yards out to make it 2-0, Charleston.Second-place Charleston (5-1) outshot fifth-place Baltimore (2-6)

TULSA, Okla. -- The Baltimore Bays' season ended Saturday night with a 7-4 loss to the Oklahoma City Slickers in the U.S. Interregional Soccer League playoffs.The Bays had led 3-1 after the first period but were outscored 6-1 the rest of the way. The Slickersscored three fourth-period goals to put the game out of reach.The Bays had won their playoff opener Friday night, 8-7, over the Knoxville Impact.In the championship game yesterday, the Atlanta Magic completed a 54-1 run through the league with a 6-3 victory over the Slickers.

Nine veterans returned for the Baltimore Bays as they opened training camp yesterday for the second indoor season in the U.S. Interregional Soccer League.The returning veterans include two members of the 1994 league all-star team -- defender Mark Mettrick and midfielder Billy Ronson.Other returning players are midfielders Joe Layfield and Eric Spalt; forwards Eric Riedlbauer, Roberto Ascenzi and David Parravano; and defenders Joe Barger and Steve Nichols.The team's practices, which are open to the public, will be held Mondays at 9 p.m. at Du Burns Arena and Wednesdays at 8 p.m. at Myers Pavilion.

Michael Goiley scored twice on headers in the first half to lead the Greensboro Dynamo past the Baltimore Bays, 3-2, in front of 1,311 fans last night at UMBC Stadium.Gabe Garcia set up Goiley's first goal at 17:15 to give the Dynamo (5-1) a 1-0 lead. Ed Quick answered 3:16 later for the Bays (2-6) with his first goal of the season. Goiley scored his second goal at 22:33 for a 2-1 Greensboro edge.Garcia added Greensboro's final goal of the half at the 25:22 mark.Joe Koziol brought the Bays within one after beating Michael Gosselin to a cross pass from Rob Elliott.

Bays under-19 team earns 2-1 win in 2nd round of nationals The Baltimore Bays under-19 team used goals by J.J. Raley and Gary Weisbaum in the final four minutes to top Pike Indy Burn from Indiana, 2-1, on Thursday in the second round of the U.S. Youth National Soccer championship at Lancaster, Mass. The Bays will advance to Sunday's national championship game with a win or a tie against the Colorado Rush today. The Bays under-15 team earned a 1-1 tie with Blast FC from Ohio and will qualify for the championship game with a victory over South Charlotte Gold from North Carolina today.

Paul Reilly scored the game-winner with 2:52 left on an assist by Christopher Armas, and Cordt Weinstien added a goal one minute later as the visiting Long Island Rough Riders defeated the Baltimore Bays, 5-3, in United States International Soccer League action yesterday at UMBC.Baltimore (2-11) led 3-1 until Weinstien scored his first goal at the 46:25 mark of the second half. Bays Tim Wittman received a red card at 47:00 for arguing a foul and Baltimore played a man down for the rest of the half.

Eric Riedlbauer and Scott Krosnowski scored two goals apiece last night to lead the Baltimore Bays to a 6-1 victory over the Orlando Lions.Riedlbauer and Krosnowski each scored in the opening quarter as the Bays (7-2) took a 2-1 lead. Greg Brick scored for Orlando (4-3).Krosnowski and Dan Santoro each scored in the second period, extending Baltimore's lead to 4-1. After not scoring in third quarter, the Bays struck again with Ron Chesney and Riedlbauer goals. Chesney, Billy Ronson and Mark Mettrick each had an assist for Baltimore.

The Baltimore Bays have reached an agreement with Home Team Sports to have game highlights and player interviews shown on the regional cable network's weekly "Soccer '94" program from March 7 to July 24.Bays general manager Ben Neil said the agreement is "a bibreakthrough for us in our first year of operation. It will mean a lot to our hopes for success."Didier Godat, producer of "Soccer '94," said the Bays woulhave a two-minute segment on the 30-minute show."We have one show each week and it runs on Wednesday anFriday nights at either 7 p.m. or 11 p.m., depending on live events," said Godat.
