A Tarot card might have foretold that Ellwood "Bunky" Bartlett would win $32.6 million in the 2007 lottery. Unfortunately, the spirit world provided no omens that might have helped the 45-year-old practicing Wiccan better manage his good fortune. This week, as much of the East Coast is waiting for the winners of the record $656 million jackpot to step forward, Bartlett of Westminster agreed to talk about the things that have gone wrong - and right - in his life during the past three years.

Del. Donald H. Dwyer Jr. said Thursday that he had been drinking alcohol when a motorboat he was operating collided with another boat in the Magothy River — an accident that left six people with serious injuries. In a brief news conference outside a Baltimore hospital, the Pasadena Republican said his blood-alcohol content was measured at 0.2 percent after Wednesday's crash. The legal limit is .08, according to state law. "I deeply regret my actions and ask for your forgiveness," Dwyer said, adding that no one should operate a car or boat while under the influence of alcohol.

Gov. William Donald Schaefer yesterday suggested that the hapless Washington Redskins may be suffering from something beyond the control of players and coaches: the curse of Baltimore.Schaefer, a passionate advocate for returning Baltimore to the NFL, predicted that the Redskins would not win another game until team owner Jack Kent Cooke stops opposing a team in Baltimore.Meanwhile, Gov.-elect Parris N. Glendening yesterday reiterated his opposition to the Redskins building a stadium in Laurel, saying such structures should be built in city centers.

I will admit to knowing little about the inner workings of the movie industry, from Hollywood to film distribution to the big screen complexes and smaller screen venues, such as Baltimore's much-loved Senator Theater . But I think I know what I want as a movie-goer. As I drove by the Senator last weekend, I noticed that it was closed for renovations. The new owners are planning three screens instead of just one, and a restaurant. That sounds nice. I can't wait to see what they do with the place.

From the BaltTech blog: Big news today: Verizon Wireless will soon start selling the iPhone 4. The Verizon homepage has been updated to include the iPhone 4. Apple's homepage has it, too. Verizon will be selling the 16 GB version for $199 with a two-year plan, starting Feb. 10. I'm checking to see the details on the monthly plans that are offered... the rumor was that Verizon would offer an unlimited data package to differentiate itself from AT&T, which offers tiered/capped plans.

From the BalthTech blog: Big news for fans of Verizon's wireless network: It'll be getting the Apple iPad starting Oct. 28. You'll be able to buy the iPad at 2,000 Verizon Wireless stores nationwide. (Is this the precursor to Verizon getting the iPhone next year, as recent reports suggest?) Interestingly, consumers won't have access to the iPad 3G. Instead, if you want one from Verizon, you could buy an iPad Wi-Fi version plus a Verizon MiFi mobile hotspot. The hotspot uses Verizon's 3G network and generates a Wi-Fi hotspot that you can then use the iPad with.

I want to thank The Sun for its coverage of the appointment of the Baltimore County school superintendent and, almost concurrently, the effort on behalf of the legislators to add elected members to the county's school board ("Baltimore County school board OKs Dance as superintendent," April 11, and "Balto. Co. school board bill fails in final hours of Assembly session," April 10). As a resident of Baltimore County, I am dismayed, disheartened and, frankly, disgusted, that there did not seem to be more public outcry about these two recent, critical and seemingly connected developments in the future of our public schools.

After news that his partner on the popular Mix 106.5 morning show had been let go, Reagan Warfield posted an emotional tribute to Jojo Girard on Facebook. "The last 24 hours have been and emotional blur," wrote Warfield, who remains at the station. "This is tough.
