The Anne Arundel County Board of Appeals has given the go-ahead for the demolition of a dilapidated but historic house in Brooklyn Park.The board voted 4-3 to overturn the county Office of Planning and Code Enforcement's decision not to issue a permit to raze the house, according to minutes of a closed session the appeals board held last week.County officials said they would not comment on the vote until they had read the decision, which may not come out for a month.Neither the owner of the property, Georgia O. Clift of Connecticut, nor her lawyer could be reached yesterday.

County officials are challenging a Board of Appeals ruling giving the go-ahead for the demolition of a historic house in Brooklyn Park because they feel the board never should have heard the case.Robert M. Pollock, senior assistant county attorney, said he has asked the Circuit Court to review the board's April 7 ruling.Thomas A. Pavlinic, attorney for the owner of the historic Ballman-Gischel House, said he will ask the court to strike down a county law that permits the razing of historic buildings only if they are about to collapse.

Harbin Farms employees recently began stacking large pumpkins on display, in addition to their second most popular seasonal items — mums and a wide variety of apples. Kimberly Taylor, who runs the produce stand with her husband, Michael, and her uncle, had worried that a year and a half dispute over zoning might have prevented the fall display from going up. The stand has been at Route 99 and Old Mill Road in Ellicott City since 1958, when it was part of a larger family farm.

The owner of a 125-year-old house in Brooklyn Park can demolish the building, thanks to an Anne Arundel County Circuit judge, but first the house will be the backdrop for the announcement of the start of a community historical society.Judge H. Chester Goudy Jr. allowed demolition of the Ballman-Gischel House, on 10 acres between Ballman Avenue and Patrick Henry Drive, by upholding an April decision by the county Board of Appeals, which voted 4-3 to issue a permit to raze the dilapidated, historic building.

Driver crashes into car in Pasadena, diesPASADENA -- A 27-year-old Pasadena man died early yesterday morning when the car he was driving crashed head-on into a parked car, county police said.Officer Norval Cooper, of the traffic safety section, said Joseph William Ballman, of the 8300 block of Dock Road, was driving a 1987 Chevrolet Camaro southbound in the 200 block of Hickory Point Road near Theis Drive shortly before 2 a.m. when he crossed the center line and crashed into a 1986 Chrysler New Yorker parked in front of a house on the opposite side of the road.

Seven occupants, including two young children, were taken to area hospitals last night as a fire heavily damaged a two-story apartment house in Brooklyn Park, authorities said. Crews from five county fire companies and one station in Baltimore responded to the blaze, which was reported at 8:59 p.m. in the 5200 block of Ballman Ave. Those taken to hospitals included two boys, 4 years and 10 weeks, and their mother. Capt. Lee Cornwell, a county fire spokesman, said they had minor burns or smoke inhalation.
