Virginia probably will try to test Maryland's secondary, suspect last year, early. The Terps will try to run in the opening minutes so they can open up their passing attack. Maryland may be hampered by the injuries to starting OG Dave deBruin and TE Brett Stevenson, both questionable with knee injuries that have cost them substantial practice time.

When Navy visited Charlottesville, Va., a year ago, the city was riding an emotional cloud. Virginia's win over Clemson the previous week had boosted the team's confidence and eventually helped vault the Cavaliers to the top of the college rankings. There will be no such frenzied atmosphere when the Midshipmen (0-1) take on the Cavaliers (0-1) at Scott Stadium tonight -- just an angry group of Virginia players trying to find themselves -- perhaps without their starting quarterback. In other games involving state teams, Morgan State (0-2)

Sampson restricted until '13; IU on probation col. basketball The NCAA placed Indiana University on three years of probation yesterday and made it nearly impossible for former coach Kelvin Sampson to return to college coaching anytime soon for a telephone recruiting scandal that set back the once-storied men's basketball program. The NCAA gave Sampson five years of potential penalties for his role in more than 100 impermissible phone calls to recruits made while he was still on probation for a similar phone-call scandal at Oklahoma.

Larry Bigbie believed it was "going to be more fun going out to take batting practice than to take a beating." Say goodbye, football. His high school in Hobart, Ind., was a gridiron powerhouse, winning the state Class 4A title two of his four years there. Bigbie was the quarterback in a sprint-out passing game and was a prized recruit among all the state universities - Indiana, Purdue, Indiana State and Ball State. Conversely, the Hobart baseball program was relatively unknown, so he didn't receive much recognition for his prowess in that sport.

The previous year, he was one of four juniors in conference history to accumulate at least 200 hits. His school-record 24-game hitting streak in 1999 was the third longest in MAC history, and he helped the Cardinals to their first MAC baseball title and a school-record 42 victories.

Four presidents at public research universities made a collective $9.2 million in fiscal year 2012, with the top earner of the group making much of his money because he was fired, according to a report released Sunday by the Chronicle of Higher Education. Graham B. Spanier, who was terminated from Pennsylvania State University in late 2011 for his handling of a child-molestation scandal, was paid $2.9 million - $1.2 million of it in severance. This was the first fiscal year that four presidents topped the million mark in compensation.

ANNAPOLIS -- They came in with a new quarterback, a new offense, a new attitude and even played at a new time -- at night -- in order to attract new fans. But in the end, it was the same old result for the Navy Midshipmen, as poor defense and mistakes on offense led to a 33-10, season-opening loss to Ball State before 22,661 last night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The loss was a big disappointment for Navy coach George Chaump, who thought his team was ready to get a firm grasp of his system.

Navy coach Paul Johnson indicated yesterday that he didn't suffer any eye strain reviewing his team's 41-24 loss to No. 15 Rutgers - a performance he considered way, way below par. "It wasn't that hard to see [the lack of] effort," said Johnson, who, with his assistant coaches, counted 62 offenses, 31 on each side of the ball. "You don't have to look that close. We grade technique, assignment and effort. If they don't play to the whistle, that's a [lack of] effort. Ball State @Navy Saturday, 5 p.m., 1090 AM Line: Navy by 7
