Farmers' markets -- they're not just for produce anymore. If you haven't checked out the local farmers' markets lately you might be surprised at the items for sale. Not only have the markets been carrying exotic produce and more Asian vegetables but you can buy the ingredients for a complete meal at many of the local farmers' markets.Eggs, dairy products, honey, cider, herbs, jams and jellies are common non-produce foods that have been sold for years at farmers' markets. Added to that now is a variety of baked goods, seafood, poultry, smoked meats and gourmet foods as well as flowers to decorate the dinner table, potted plants and craft items.

Because I am on a restricted diet, can you provide me with a low-fat recipe for a pastry crust? You're not alone in your quest for a low-fat crust, but a good one is hard to find. "There is no successful low-fat recipe," said Barbara Farner, extension educator in nutrition and wellness at the University of Illinois Extension. "Crisp roll-out cookies and piecrusts are two dishes without successful low-fat alternatives." Farner offered these suggestions for those on restricted diets: Select an oil-based piecrust recipe that uses the more healthful canola or olive oil. Such recipes would contain the same amount of fat, but they would contain less saturated fat. Switch to a graham-cracker crust, which requires less fat than that found in a traditional pastry crust.

MANY HAVE read about the saga of Linda Fisher, Westminster's Muffin Lady, whose door-to-door morning bakery sales were the subject of civic admiration and delectation, and then of health department regulation and closure.Shut down by authorities this month because her homemade muffins weren't prepared in inspected commercial ovens, Ms. Fisher (as well as her satisfied customers) are hopeful of an imminent solution. The community's response has been heart-warming, overwhelmingly positive support for a remarkable woman who has worked hard to support herself by doing what she does best.
