So, Todd Akin is back and he's talking rape again. You remember what happened last time. The would-be Missouri senator torpedoed his campaign two years ago after suggesting in a TV interview that if a woman is a victim of "legitimate rape," she is unlikely to get pregnant because her body "has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. " Those comments, he now wants you to know, were perfectly reasonable. In his new book, "Firing Back," Mr. Akin informs us that some rapes are not "legitimate" because some women falsely accuse.

Like the ghosts of Shakespeare's Banquo or Dickens' Jacob Marley, the specter of the late commie-hunting congressman from Wisconsin, Joseph McCarthy, will always be with us. It is summoned up today, by some on the left, who use it as a tool to thwart legitimate questions about people and ideologies that seek to destroy America. According to many commentators, the McCarthy spirit has inhabited Minnesota Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann. In several letters to high-ranking government officials, Ms. Bachmann has raised questions about Huma Abedin, a Muslim-American, who is deputy chief of staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

It comes as no surprise that Monika Bachmann probably will be running in next year's Northern Central Trail Marathon. The 29-year-old resident of Comus in Montgomery County has two second-place finishes and a pair of first-place runs in the race, including a 3-hour, 28-second finish 10 days ago. That one was good enough to break the women's course record by almost 14 minutes and improve her personal record for the marathon by 12."I had not been marathon training," says Bachmann, a doctoral candidate in international history at the London School of Economics.

Most of the attention in yesterday's 18th annual Overlea Invitational Wrestling Tournament was focused on the 152-pound final. It's a match Fallston's Nathan Bachmann would rather forget. Bachmann, a two-time defending state champion, was outlasted by Aric Fuhrman of Delone Catholic, 5-0. Delone, of Hanover, Pa., won the team championship by 34 1/2 points over runner-up Fallston. Host Overlea finished third. Fuhrman, who finished eighth in last year's Pennsylvania Catholic Championships, controlled the match from start to finish.

Violinist Maria Bachmann, pianist Jon Klibonoff and cellist Semyon Fridman, who performed piano trios at St. John's College Friday, probably will never be confused with the more famous Beaux Arts Trio, which is known for its meticulous refinement and aristocratic bearing. The Bachmann-Klibonoff-Fridman Trio takes a far more visceral approach to this chamber repertoire, locking onto its rhythmic and harmonic undercurrents and spreading the excitement of the music across the entire auditorium.

In the article "Bachmann's loose 'facts' stacking up" (Oct. 28) the writer criticizes Rep. Michele Bachmann's statement about taxes being less when she was a child. The writer uses the example of a couple earning $379,150 and being taxed 35 percent today and taxed at 59 percent 50 years ago. The problem with this argument is that a person making that much money today would have been earning approximately $52,000 50 years ago if you take inflation into account, which is the only way to do a fair comparison.

I see that Republican candidate Michele Bachmann is now "guaranteeing" gas will be $2 a gallon if she becomes president. Wow! As anyone familiar with the free market knows, there is only one way to guarantee that gas is going to be at the price set by a politician - price controls. Even the "lefty" President Obama hasn't suggested that. That puts Michele Bachmann to the left of Obama and the Democrats in Congress, even that lefty Bernie Sanders fromVermont. So in one day, Michele Bachmann has gone from right-wing darling to the very thing she claims to hate: a socialist!

A Christian dominionist won the Republican straw poll in Iowa this weekend ("Bachmann wins; Perry's in," Aug. 14) Michele Bachmann believes that as an elected leader she has a divinely ordained duty to transform American government to the dictates of her Christianity, the separation clause of the First Amendment notwithstanding. Though Iowan voters don't represent America as a whole, liberals and progressives should never underestimate the right-wing predilections of the American people.

I saw a lot of Iowa straw poll coverage this weekend, and some of it was pretty awful. But nothing made me want to gag like this exchange between Mike Huckabee and Michele Bachmann Saturday night on Huckabee's weekly conflict-of-interest hour that Fox tries to present as a variety/talk show. Less than 48 hours after Fox News received high praise from me and other critics and analysts for its handling of the GOP presidential candidates debate, comes this sorry exchange. And understand, the praise Fox News received for Thursday's debate efforts was a result of the tough, journalistic questions posed by Bret Baier and Chris Wallace.

Newsweek's crazy-eyes Michele Bachmann cover has been getting a lot of attention this week, especially from conservatives who are blasting the magazine for the unflattering image of the GOP frontrunner. (You've got to hand it to Newsweek editor Tina Brown. She knows how to stir up a controversy.)  Last night, liberal-leaning comedian Jon Stewart joined the Newsweek criticism, though not exactly for the same reasons that are making Republicans so upset.  "Newsweek, that's a s---y picture of Michele Bachmann," Stewart said.

Brendan McKinney recovered from an opening double bogey to shoot 3-under-par the rest of the way for a 36-34-70, taking a one-stroke lead halfway through the 14th annual Fall Publinx tournament at rainy Mount Pleasant Golf Course yesterday. A two-hour delay meant the last players in the top two flights finished in the twilight. McKinney, a veteran of other Baltimore Municipal Golf Corporation events but a first-time entrant in this one, finished with four birdies on putts from inside 15 feet, and one three-putt bogey.

Last week after "sting" video surfaced of counselors at the Michele Bachmann's Minnesota clinic appearing to practice a discredited form of 'therapy" intended to turn homosexuals into heterosexuals, I predicted the film would haunt her on the campaign trail. That haunting has already begun -- and it is only one of several problems she is now having to contend with. Once the video made it onto ABC  News last week, Bachmann was under fire. The video, which was shotwith hidden cameras by a gay advocacy group,  appeared in reports by veteran investigative correspondent Brian Ross.
