Alexis Blight , of Columbia, has been named to the dean's list for the spring 2011 semester at Washington and Lee University, in Lexington, Va. Kathleen Marie Langan , of Columbia, graduated in May from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She will begin family medicine residency at the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System-Falls Church in June. Langan is a 2002 graduate of Hammond High School and a 2006 graduate of The Catholic University of America, in Washington.

The search for the killers of Baltimore millionaire J. Schuyler "Sky" Alland was at a standstill in the summer of 1992. Whoever executed the businessman for his $80,000 black BMW apparently had gotten away with murder -- not to mention the car.U.S. Park Police Detective Timothy M. Squires was handling the first murder of his career, but he made a bold promise."He promised that he would find these guys," said Dorothy Alland Leighton, Mr. Alland's mother. "He said, 'Even when I retire, I'll continue to work on this case with no pay until I find who killed your son.' "His promise was fulfilled Wednesday when federal prosecutors wrapped up an intricate nationwide investigation into the February 1992 murder with the conviction of the killer, John Graham Bridges, 30, of Norfolk, Va. A co-defendant, Robert Patrick Gray, 25, of Cockeysville pleaded guilty Nov. 5."

Moving to Maryland has been a learning experience for Chad Barnhill, general manager of the Horseshoe Baltimore Casino that will fill the sweeping vacant lot currently greeting drivers coming into the city on Russell Street. At home within the walls of a casino - he's worked for Caesars Entertainment since graduating from college in 1994 - this is the first time he's overseen the building of a new facility. When he's not meeting with city officials regarding building permits, he's addressing neighborhood associations concerned about what plopping a casino near their houses might mean.

An installation artist who sculpts with mirrors and salt, an innovative cellist and a self-taught photographer whose work has been informed by the four decades that she has spent battling a rare genetic illness are the winners of the 2013 Baker Artist Awards. The $25,000 awards, announced Thursday night on Maryland Public Television's "ArtWorks," are being bestowed upon Dariusz Skoraczewski, the principal cellist of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra; sculptor Jonathan Latiano, a recent graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art ; and photographer Lynne Parks.

The pain is still fresh, but Mary Ida Vandross has to find a way to face the music. A year after burying the last of her four children, the great song stylist Luther Vandross, the Philadelphia resident can hardly bear to hear recordings of her son's famed champagne tenor. "I'm getting a little adjusted to listening," she says. "Before, I just couldn't do it. It's one day at a time." She's promoting The Ultimate Luther Vandross, a posthumous best-of collection with two previously unreleased songs.

Iredell W. "Idy" Iglehart, a retired vice president of Morgan Guarantee Trust Co., died Monday of heart failure at the Blakehurst retirement community in Towson. He was 83. Mr. Iglehart, the son of a banker and a homemaker, was born in Baltimore and raised in the Mount Vernon neighborhood. After graduating in 1945 from the Kent School in Kent, Conn., he served in the Army for a year, and then enrolled at Princeton University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in economics in 1949.

Laurence J. Adams, a McDaniel College honorary trustee and a retired engineer who once helped run one of the nation's largest aerospace corporations, died Wednesday at Johns Hopkins Hospital. The 86-year-old Potomac resident died of complications of pneumonia. The son of a farmer, Mr. Adams was born and raised in Madelia, Minn., and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1948 with a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering. It was during college that Mr. Adams met Marguerite "Peggy" Gaetz, who would become his wife.

Dr. Frederick L. Brancati, an internationally known expert on the epidemiology and prevention of type 2 diabetes who was director of the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, died Tuesday of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, at his Lutherville home. He was 53. "He was a delightful human being — smart, witty and fun to be around," said Dr. Michael J. Klag, dean of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, whom Dr. Brancati succeeded as division chief.
