A Howard County Detention Center inmate gave birth to a baby boy yesterday almost one month early, leaving her attorney scrambling to resolve several charges against her and prevent the mother and infant from being separated.Inmate Lynn A. Fortune, 24, of Columbia, has been held at the Detention Center since Sept. 22 pending trial on multiple charges, including theft and drug possession. She gave birth at Howard General Hospital on Monday and remained a patient at the hospital yesterday.Her attorney, Public Defender Richard S. Bernhardt, said Fortune was scheduled to appear in Circuit Court tomorrow for a bond reduction hearing on a misdemeanor theft charge.

NORFOLK, Va. -- A female sailor who reported to the USS Yellowstone's sick bay with cramps early Sunday delivered a big surprise five minutes later: a baby boy. Officials believe it's the first time in U.S. naval history a sailor has given birth aboard ship.The woman, 21, a seaman apprentice assigned to the Norfolk-based destroyer tender, delivered what officials said was healthy, full-term, 5-pound boy early Jan. 16, said a spokesman for the Atlantic Fleet's Surface Force.The ship was in port at Gaeta, Italy, one month into a six-month assignment to the Mediterranean.

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Defying long medical odds, doctors delivered a healthy baby boy yesterday from the womb of a woman who has been dead since April 21.Trisha Marshall's unnamed 4-pound, 15-ounce son, whose custody will be turned over to county officials, is believed to be one of few infants in the world to have survived for so long inside the body of a brain-dead mother."

Cuba, a 7-year-old horse sired in Maryland and bred in New Jersey, took the lead coming out of the far turn of the Jim McKay Maryland Million Classic yesterday and outraced Diamond David and defending champion Evil Storm down the stretch for a four-length victory in the feature race of a card at Laurel Park restricted to offspring of Maryland stallions. Nearly 22,000 showed up at Laurel for the 23rd running of what is considered Maryland's second-most important race day next to the Preakness, and $2.96 million was wagered at the track and elsewhere.

A woman gave birth to a baby boy at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport on Sunday afternoon, shortly after stepping off an incoming flight, an airport spokesman said. Maryland Transportation Authority Police and the airport's fire and rescue department responded to a call of a woman in labor at about 2:20 p.m., said BWI spokesman Jonathan Dean. He said an officer helped the woman to deliver a healthy baby on the floor of a restroom on the airport's D Concourse.
