With its rolling lawns and stately trees, the grounds of Babcock Presbyterian Church, just off busy Loch Raven Boulevard, is like an urban oasis. On a sweltering early August morning, a cool breeze sweeps across a grassy knoll behind the church building. The open space along Loch Ness Road is contoured with a dozen small, rectangular garden plots where squash, cucumbers, tomatoes and cantaloupes ripen on the vine and an occasional rabbit darts across the lawn and into the trees. The little plots, most about the size of a large dining room table, are part of the community garden project that Babcock Church started last year.

The Dayton Raiders 13-14 baseball team went winless in the double-elimination National Amateur Baseball Federation national championship tournament in Northville, Mich., last week.Dayton manager Glenn Babcock said the team ran into one of those streaks where everything they hit hard was caught and everything the other team hit seemed to find a hole."It was still quite a worthwhile experience," Babcock said. "We didn't give up, the players kept rooting for each other, and I was proud of them."

G. JANE HARTMAN, 90, a registered dietician and resident of Edenwald in Towson, MD, died August 17 at St. Joseph Hospital after a brief illness. Miss Hartman is survived by her nephew Thomas C. Pears IV and two great nieces Emily and Elizabeth Pears, of Boston, MA. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, August 22 at 11:30 A.M. at the Babcock Presbyterian Church, 8240 Loch Raven Blvd., with a reception following in the church fellowship hall. The building boom in ethanol plants will go bust by the end of this year, scuttled by increased supplies of the fuel, falling prices and reduced return on investment, according to researchers at Iowa State University. If they're right - and some who follow the industry and invest in it believe their forecast is off the mark - ethanol may not bring the same level of profits that plant investors have enjoyed in recent years. "We think the expected returns to an ethanol plant are zero or negative in 2008," said Bruce Babcock, economist and director of the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development at Iowa State, in Ames.
