Oldfields goalie Ceili Betsch never played field hockey until two months ago. But the native of the Netherlands must have been a quick study.Yesterday, Betsch made 10 saves and shut out top-seeded Park to help give Oldfields a share of the Association of Independent Schools B Division Tournament title. After playing to a 0-0 double-overtime tie at St. Paul's School for Girls, Park and Oldfields were declared co-champs.The Bruins (8-2-1) outshot Oldfields, 24-5, with a 15-1 advantage on penalty corners.

Glenelg Country School field hockey coaches Barbara Wolf and Patti Ordonez know winning is a state of mind. Now, if they could just convince their players.Early in the season, Wolf and Ordonez thought they had enough talent to boost last year's one-win season and move up in the Association of Independent Schools B Division.Instead, after Wednesday's heart-breaking 3-2 loss to Lutheran, Glenelg's record stood at 1-5-2 overall and 0-4-1 in the B Division. That does not mean the talent is not there, say the coaches.

At Glenelg Country School, a strong middle-school feeder system for field hockey is a mixed blessing for coaches Patti Ordonez and Barbara Wolf.Unlike the county public schools, Glenelg Country, which plays in the Association of Independent Schools B Division, has a feeder system. Its eighth-grade team was so strong last year it beat Roland Park, whose varsity has won or shared the last three AIS A Division championships and has been to the title game six straight years. That should bode well for the Dragons' future.

Oldfields girls lacrosse coach Beth Franks knows how to turn a program around. In the past five years, she has taken her team from winless to peerless in the Association of Independent Schools B Division.Oldfields rebounded from an 0-11 record in 1989 to 11-2 in 1993. Franks' team capped the turnaround this spring by winning the B Division Tournament championship, 9-8, over Institute of Notre Dame.Winning a title, even in the B Division, is a tougher task for Franks and her players than most in the AIS, because Oldfields, in northern Baltimore County, is a boarding school.

Dozens of high school sailors from the Eastern Seaboard converged at the Naval Academy last weekend for the double-handed Mallory and single-handed Cressy eliminations.Breezes were brisk northwesterlies both days, creating challenging conditions for the sailors using 420s for the Mallory competition on Saturday and Lasers for the Cressy racing on Sunday. And when the six races for each of the A and B divisions in Saturday's Mallory fleet were over, first place overall in the 12-school competition went to Severn School's team with 32 points.

It's that time of the year again for the Park School girls basketball team. With the Association of Independent Schools tournament starting tomorrow, the Bruins (15-1) will enter as the No. 1 seed and favorite to win the B Division championship.Park finished with an overall record of 14-4 last year and lost in the AIS B Division championship game to rival Garrison Forest by one point. Bruins coach Robin Willard and his squad are looking forward to the probable rematch."We're going to have to play good defense and run our offense successfully," Willard said.
